LADY SAINTS SOCCER RESULTS FROM FLAGLER COLLEGE TOURNAMENT; LIMESTONE LOOKS AHEAD TO SPRING SCHEDULE

The Lady Saints soccer team recently wrapped up competition at the Flagler College Tournament. The Lady Saints traveled to St. Augustine, Fla,  on March 7 to play at Flagler College.  Due to heavy rain games were cancelled on Saturday.  Limestone was able to play on Sunday against Flagler College at 8 a.m. and faced the University of North Florida at 10 a.m.

The Saints took an early 3-2 lead at half-time against Flagler.  In the first half, Madi Dulisse scored on a fast break to squeeze the ball past the Flagler goalie.  Dulisse was assisted by Savannah Evans.  The second goal came shortly afterwards on a chip shot from 22 yards out by Evans. Before the half ended, the Saints found the back of the net again off of a free kick as Shireen Bradford found Alexis Brothers, who headed the ball into the goal.

In the second half, the Saints were able to put two more goals into the net and hold Flagler to just one goal.  Bekki Hagarman fired a shot off of a rebound from Flagler to sail the ball past the Flagler goalkeeper.  Flagler then answered with a header goal from a corner kick.  The Lady Saints sealed the game with one more goal from Bradford off of a service from a corner kick from Hagarman.

“We played a 9-versus-9 game, so there is going to be more goals than normal,” pointed out Limestone Head Coach Tina Weaver. “The fact that our ladies got the lead and held it against Flagler shows their tenacity for this game.”

In the second game of the day, the Lady Saints took on University of North Florida.  North Florida took control of the game early as it recorded all four of its goals in the first half.  The Lady Saints were able to post a goal in the first half to not get shut out.  The goal came from Brothers striking the ball upper ninety from a layoff by Dulisse.  In the second period neither squad scored.

“Playing back to back games with limited subs is hard,” commented Weaver. “But the ladies showed that they were not going to quit.  I was very pleased with their efforts, taking on these teams and playing on another level.”

The Flagler College tournament is only one competition in Limestone’s tough spring schedule, which includes several Division I programs and strong Division II teams.  The games will vary from small-sided games of 6v6 to full fielded games of 11v11.

“We put this spring schedule together to test the players,” pointed out Weaver. “Just like Pat Summit has said, ‘You have to play the best, to be the best.’  With that in mind I feel that playing Division 1 and high level Division II programs will expose the team to another level of play.  This will only benefit our program as we move towards to the next level.  I want our players to be challenged.”
