NO. 2 LIMESTONE DEFEATS LEES-MCRAE 25-3

GAFFNEY, S.C.—Limestone’s No.2-ranked women’s lacrosse team beat Conference Carolinas-rival Lees-McRae 25-3 on Saturday at Saints Field. The Lady Saints climb to 8-1 (5-0 conference) as the Bobcats fall to 0-9 (0-5 league).

Limestone outshot Lees-McRae 37-11, and had the 16-13 advantage on ground balls. The Lady Saints won 23 of the game’s 30 draw controls.

Fifteen Lady Saints scored in the victory. Terri George (Jordan, N.Y.), Katie Ilott (Whitby, Ontario, Canada), and Summer Ferraro (East Setauket, N.Y.) each scored three goals. Melissa Howard (Ferndale, Md.) led LC with three assists, as Kelly Lickert (Penn Yan, N.Y.), Dani Tosky (Bluffton, S.C.), and Casey Wilcox (Liverpool, N.Y.) tallied two assists apiece.

George had six ground balls and three draw controls. Caroline Pickell (Woodbridge, Va.) and Ilott each posted three draw controls. Ferraro had two caused turnovers. Goalkeepers Erin Cavanaugh (Ellicott City, Md.) and Michaela Reynolds (Columbia, Md.) each posted two saves.

Desiree Cox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) scored all three of Lees-McRae’s goals, and Ellie Psillas (Hagerstown, Md.) tallied an assist. Cox also led her team with three draw controls. Goalkeeper Kristine Koch (West Falls, N.Y.) made six saves.

Today was Senior Day for the Lady Saints, as Limestone recognized Erin Cavanaugh, Summer Ferraro, Terri George, Marissa Pesce, Caroline Pickell, and Aricka Piersma.

This senior class has won the conference regular season title every year they were at Limestone. Each player helped the team to a top 10 ranking every year, as well as the current No. 2 ranking which is the highest maintained ranking in program history. Five of these players helped Limestone to the 2006 conference tournament title and a second appearance in the Final Four of the NCAA tournament in 2006.
 

A goalkeeper from Ellicott City, Md., Erin Cavanaugh began her career with the Saints as a freshman in 2005. She has played in 45 games during her career, compiled an impressive 21-6 record, and has 22 caused turnovers and 80 ground balls. Erin ranks second all-time in the Limestone records with her 7.86 goals against average, and she is fourth in the Lady Saints records with 256 career saves. In the single season records, she is second with 145 saves in 2007. In 2007, she was a Second-Team All-American, and earned Second-Team All-Region and First-Team All-Conference honors. She is the daughter of Teresa and Bob Cook. Erin will graduate with a degree in English.

 

Summer Ferraro joined Limestone in 2004. She had a standout freshman season as she garnered Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Freshman of the Year honors. After sitting out the 2005 season with an injury, she returned for the 2006 season, earning NCAA Division II and CVAC All-Tournament team honors. She has played in 55 contests for Limestone, recorded 47 caused turnovers and 23 assists. Summer is ranked in the top 10 in the Limestone career records with 117 points, 94 goals, and 137 ground balls. She is third all-time with 91 draw controls. A native of East Setauket, N.Y., her parents are Virginia and Kurt Ferraro. She is an honors student majoring in biology.

 

Terri George came to Limestone after a standout JUCO career at Herkimer Community College. At Herkimer, she earned First Team All-American and All-Region honors, and was also named an Academic All-American. In just two years with the Lady Saints, Terri has scored 21 goals, tallied 9 assists, recorded 38 ground balls, and caused 13 turnovers. Terri is ranked top 10 in the Limestone single season records with 35 draw controls. She is the daughter of Russ and Nancy George. Originally from Jordan, N.Y., she is pursuing a degree in physical education.

 

From West Babylon, N.Y., Marissa Pesce began her career with the Lady Saints in 2005. She is a two-time All-American and three-time All-region honoree, garnered All-Conference honors as a freshman and junior, and earned conference all-tournament team honors in 2006. Marissa currently is fourth in the Limestone career records with 158 points, is second with 128 career goals and with 94 draw controls. She also ranks top 10 in the Limestone record books for single season goals. Her parents are Linda and Michael Pesce. She will graduate with a degree in elementary education.

 

Caroline Pickell, a defender from Woodbridge, Va., joined Limestone in 2005. She has appeared in 26 games and has had 3 starts while recording 13 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers. She is the daughter of Elisa and Jeff Pickell. Caroline will graduate from Limestone College with a degree in business.

 

Following a successful high school career being the second highest scorer in South Carolina, Aricka Piersma has been apart of the Lady Saints team since 2005. She has played in 26 games, recorded 8 goals and 7 assists for 15 points, and has scooped up six ground balls. Her parents are Richard and Marilyn Piersma. From Columbia, S.C., Aricka is majoring in sports management with minors in coaching and business.
