NO. 2 LADY SAINTS LACROSSE BEATS NO. 7 LOCK HAVEN 16-13

GAFFNEY, S.C.—The No. 2-ranked Limestone College women’s lacrosse team defeated No. 7 Lock Haven 16-13 on Saturday afternoon at Saints Field. Lock Haven falls to 1-1 on the season as the Lady Saints improve to 6-1.

Lady Saint Kelly Lickert (Penn Yan, N.Y.) tallied seven points during the contest from five goals and two assists.  Leigh Titus (Pine Brook, N.J.) also had seven points for Lock Haven as she scored six goals and had one assist.

Limestone jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals from Terri George (Jordan, N.Y.) and Shea Farrell (Blue Point, N.Y.). Lock Haven tied the game as Leigh Titus (Pine Brook, N.J.) and Rachael Williams (Gettysburg, Pa.) scored. Katie Ilott (Whitbey, Ontario, Canada) gave the Lady Saints a brief 3-2 lead before Jessica Blickenstaff (Thurmont, Md.) tied the score. Kelly Lickert (Penn Yan, N.Y.) had back-to-back goals followed by points from Lauryn Wise (Pasadena, Md.) and Melissa Howard (Ferndale, Md.) to take the 7-3 lead. Lock Haven started to gain momentum in the closing minutes of the half as Kari Sielski (Jackson, N.J.) tallied a goal with 2:14 left in the half, followed by another goal from Titus with 30 second left to play.

Trailing 7-5 going into the second half, Titus continued the Eagles’ scoring run with a goal at 28:58. Limestone kept its lead after Lickert and Marissa Pesce (West Babylon, N.Y.) scored.  Amber Hoch (Harleysville, Pa.) scored on a free-position attempt, but Ilott responded with a goal of her own at 21:49. Titus got LHU within 2 (10-8) off a pass from Hoch with 21:49 left. The Lady Saints scored three goals to go up 13-8, before Blickenstaff tallied another goal with 17:17 remaining in the period. Ilott had an unassisted goal, but the Eagles’ Caitlyn Watts (Willow Grove, Pa.) and Titus scored to cut Limestone’s lead to 14-11. Lickert rebounded Summer Ferraro’s (East Setauket, N.Y.) free position shot and put the ball into the goal for the 15-11 advantage. Hoch scored again with 6:52 left in the match, and Lauryn Wise (Pasadena, Md.) had a goal just moments later. Titus scored the game’s final goal at 6:08. Limestone maintained possession in the final minutes for the 16-13 victory.

The Lady Saints had the advantage on shots (36-30), ground balls (22-13), and draw controls (19-12).

Limestone goalkeeper Erin Cavanaugh (Ellicott City, Md.) had 13 saves, 5 ground balls, and a caused turnover. George led the Lady Saints with four draw controls and picked up two ground balls. Pesce, Ilott, and Wise recorded three draw controls apiece. Chrissy Grogg (Taberg, N.Y.) had two caused turnovers. All of Limestone’s starting attackmen and midfielders scored in the win.

Watts had a game-high four caused turnovers and six ground balls, and she also tallied two draw controls. Kathleen Zichelli (South Orange, N.J.) had four draw controls. Goalie Kira Nuttall (Towson, Md.) posted 13 saves, 2 caused turnovers, and 2 ground balls.

The Lady Saints host Dowling on March 20 at 4 p.m. at Saints Field. Lock Haven travels to play Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, Pa., on March 19 at 4 p.m.
