NO. 3 LIMESTONE UPSETS NO. 2 WEST CHESTER |
Jackie Baker (Media, Pa.) put the Golden Rams up 1-0 with a free-position shot early in the first half. Limestone’s Kelly Lickert (Penn Yan, N.Y.) evened the score just a couple minutes later. Gabrielle Stitz (Hatboro, Pa.) gave West Chester the 2-1 lead with her goal at 23:28, but goals from the Lady Saints’ Lickert and Marissa Pesce (West Babylon, N.Y.) gave Limestone the 3-2 advantage. The Rams scored three consecutive goals to lead by two (5-3), with 5 minutes left in the first period. Limestone gained momentum late in the half after a goal by Renee Albro (Purcellville, Va.) with 17 seconds left to play. West Chester tried to maintain its two-goal lead in the waning moments of the period, but couldn’t beat the buzzer. The Golden Rams led 5-4 at halftime. Melissa Howard (Ferndale, Md.) helped Limestone start the second half on the right foot with an unassisted goal at 26:50 to tie the score. West Chester’s Stephanie Kienle (West Chester, Pa.) put her team up 6-5 with a free-position goal three minutes later. The Lady Saints went up 9-6 with a goal by Terri George (Jordan, N.Y.), back-to-back goals from Katie Ilott (Whitbey, Ontario, Canada), and another point from Summer Ferraro (East Setauket, N.Y.). West Chester fought to make a comeback in the last four minutes, as Courtney Whiting (Downingtown, Pa.) and Baker recorded goals, but couldn’t come up with another point for the win. Ferraro, Chrissy Grogg (Taberg, N.Y.), and Lickert each had an assist for the Lady Saints. George led her team with three draw controls while Pesce had two. Goalkeeper Erin Cavanaugh (Ellicott City, Md.) had 10 saves and two caused turnovers during the contest. Kienle also had two assists for West Chester. Gina DeDomenicis (Voorhees, N.J.), Chrissy Stokes (Lafayette Hill, Pa,), and Whiting each recorded two draw controls. Nicole Haines (Malvern, Pa.) and Tatios each had three ground balls. Goalie Mary Beth Green (West Chester, Pa.) posted 11 saves. Both teams had 25 shots. Limestone edged the Golden Rams on ground balls, 19-16, and draw controls 10-9. WCU was 18-27 on clears while the Lady Saints were 17-23. Each squad was 2-7 on free-position attempts. Limestone hosts No. 6 Lock Haven in Gaffney, S.C. at 12 p.m. on March 15. West Chester travels to Belmont, N.C., to face the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on March 11 at 3 p.m. |
