CRUSADERS ADVANCE TO CONFERENCE CAROLINAS FINAL WITH 15-9 WIN OVER QUEENS

GAFFNEY, S.C.—#2-seeded Belmont Abbey defeated #3 Queens University 15-9 in the semifinals of the Conference Carolinas women’s lacrosse tournament to advance to the championship game. The Crusaders climb to 12-6 this season while the Royals fall to 11-7.

Belmont Abbey will face Limestone, the #1 seed, in the conference championship on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Saints Field. The Lady Saints defeated St. Andrews 12-6 in the first semifinal game to advance to the championship. The 2008 Conference Carolinas women’s lacrosse tournament is hosted by Limestone College.

Belmont Abbey had a 5-4 lead at halftime before outscoring Queens 10-5 in the second period for the victory. The Abbey had the 34-19 advantage on shots and a 19-14 advantage on ground balls. The Royals had a 14-12 edge on draw controls.

Three Crusaders recorded hat tricks in the win: Tara Chmil (Lake Mary, Fla.), Laurie Jordan (Davidsonville, Md.), and Shannon Farden (Oswego, N.Y.). Chmil also had three assists for six points, while Brianna Dignan (Nashua, N.H.) had five points from four assists and one goal.

Farden led the Abbey with five ground balls. Farden and Dignan each had three caused turnovers. Jordan had three draw controls. Goalkeeper Kate Gavin (Pasadena, Md.) posted seven saves.

The Royals’ Kelley Duffey (New Hope, Minn.) and Carolynn Loan (Cazenovia, N.Y.) each had four points with two goals and two assists each. Amanda Mahle (Baltimore, Md.) recorded five draw controls and Lauren Bilski (Salisbury, Md.) led her team with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Goalie Logan Canale (Orlando, Fla.) had 11 saves.
