NO. 2 LIMESTONE ADVANCES TO CONFERENCE CAROLINAS CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 12-6 WIN OVER ST. ANDREWS |
The Lady Saints will play #2-seeded Belmont Abbey in the conference championship on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Saints Field. Belmont Abbey defeated Queens University 15-9 in the day’s second semifinal match to advance to the championship game. The 2008 Conference Carolinas women’s lacrosse tournament is hosted by Limestone College. The Knights gave the Lady Saints a run for their money in the first half as SAPC goalkeeper Eryn McCaffrey (Cicero, N.Y.) saved 12 of Limestone’s 22 shots to keep her team in the game. Limestone jumped out to the 4-0 led in the first half, but a goal by Kelsey Binggeli (Newark, N.Y) and a good free-position attempt by Kerrie Brown (Irondequoit, N.Y.) put the Knights within two of the Lady Saints (4-2) entering halftime. St. Andrews scored the first goal of the second period, but Limestone had five straight goals to take the 9-3 lead. Kim McDaniel (Joppa, Md.) and Alexis Goldman (Winter Springs, Fla.) had back-to-back goals to cut Limestone’s advantage to three. The Lady Saints had three consecutive goals, and St. Andrews added another in the final minute of the contest. Marissa Pesce (West Babylon, N.Y.) led Limestone with four points from three goals and an assist. Summer Ferraro (East Setauket, N.Y.) and Chrissy Grogg (Taberg, N.Y.) each scored twice. Melissa Howard (Ferndale, Md.) had two assists and added a goal. Lauryn Wise (Pasadena, Md.) had a team-high three draw controls. Ferraro and Howard picked up six and five ground balls, respectively. Terri George (Jordan, N.Y.) had a game-high three caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Erin Cavanaugh (Ellicott City, Md.) posted five saves. McCaffrey had 19 saves for the match, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Brown and Goldman each had two draw controls. Limestone outshot St. Andrews 42-15 and the Lady Saints had 25 ground balls to the visitors’ 14. Limestone was 10-11 on clear attempts as the Knights were 10-22. The Lady Saints won 13 of the game’s 20 draw controls. |
