LIMESTONE SWIM TEAMS NATIONALLY-RANKED

GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Limestone College Men’s and women’s swimming teams are listed in the final NCAA Division II team rankings for the 2007-2008 season, recently released by www.collegeswimming.com.

The Limestone men are ranked No. 9, while the Limestone women are ranked No. 17.

The Saints finished 6-1 overall in dual meets this year, while the Lady Saints finished 3-4 overall.

At the 2008 NCAA National Championships, the men’s 200 freestyle relay tied the national record (1:20.69) and took first place to come home with Limestone College’s first national championship for the swimming program. At the meet, the team had 28 All-American swims, set 15 school records and 6 Bluegrass Mountain Conference open records, and finished 9th in the nation. On the women’s side, Donna Wickham finished seventh in the 100 backstroke and finished 30th overall in the women's team standings.

Limestone is the highest-ranked team from the Bluegrass Mountain Conference in both polls.

“At our very first team meeting, I really tried to encourage the team and let them know we would be nationally ranked by the end of the season,” said Saints swimming Head Coach Allen Gilchrest. “I wanted them to get excited about the upcoming year--and what an exciting year it was! I am really proud of my teams’ accomplishments. The season starts in late August and ends in the middle of March. It takes a great deal of commitment, focus, and determination from each individual to compete at a national level throughout the entire year. Our team has shown that commitment level! Their hard work has paid off, and it feels good to be nationally ranked!”
