MEN’S SOCCER HAS SUCCESSFUL SPRING SEASON

The Saints soccer team recently wrapped up its spring 2008 season. Limestone faced a challenging scrimmage schedule against several NCAA Division I opponents.

“I was extremely pleased with the results from the spring,” stated Head Coach Eric Alsop. “We had a challenging schedule and limited numbers, but the boys put in a lot of hard work and dedication, which all paid off in the end.  Our only loss of the spring came at the hands of UNC-Greensboro, a Division I program with a strong tradition of success, and even in that match we had several quality opportunities.”

Limestone started its spring schedule at the College of Charleston Tournament in February where the Saints defeated NCAA Division I’s Presbyterian, 1-0, and the College of Charleston, 1-0. Limestone also beat Division II-rival Francis Marion, 2-0. At the CESA tournament on February 27, Limestone battled Spartanburg Methodist to a scoreless draw before beating the CESA Caps 4-1 in rough conditions on a cold and blustery day.

Limestone headed to North Carolina to face High Point University (NCAA Division I) on March 26. The Saints and Panthers tied 1-1 in a 90 minute match. Limestone also had a 1-1 draw against another Division I opponent, Gardner-Webb, in early April.

The Saints suffered their only loss of the spring to UNC-Greensboro in an 80 minute match at the Spartans’ tournament on April 12. Limestone also tied Radford 0-0 in a 60 minute contest later that day.

The Saints’ team captain, Ali Benson, added, “From a player’s perspective, it’s been an important spring for us all. We’ve come up against some solid teams this term and have shown our capabilities and what we can do on the pitch. The squad has really come together on and off the pitch which has led to a lot of our success this spring.  It’s important for us to take this current mentality and confidence with us into the season, and I’m sure we will, as we look forward to having a good season.”
