NO. 4 LIMESTONE DEFEATS NO. 8 WINGATE 14-11 |
GAFFNEY, S.C.-- The No. 4 Limestone College men's lacrosse team improved to 7-0 on the season with a 14-11 victory against Wingate University on Saturday afternoon at Saints Field. The Bulldogs fall to 7-2 overall with the loss. The Saints’ Brendan Storrier (LaFayette, N.Y.) recorded eight points from five goals and three assists. A.J. Vaughn (Skaneateles, N.Y.) chipped in four goals as Justin Haworth (Deer Park, N.Y.) added three. Wingate’s Stephen Torkington (Coronado, Calif.), Kyle Costello (Wilmington, N.C.), and Greg Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) each scored twice. Both teams scored three goals in the first period, but Limestone had the 4-2 edge in the second for the 7-5 lead at halftime. The Saints and Bulldogs each had a pair of goals in the third quarter to put the score at 9-7 in favor of the hosts heading into the final period. Goals by the Bulldog’s Mark Hodsdon (Hilton Head, S.C.) and Williams tied the score at 9-9 with roughly fourteen minutes left in the game. However, Vaughn scored back-to-back goals to lift the Saints. Limestone never relinquished the lead as the Saints cruised to their seventh win of 2008. Limestone outshot Wingate 41-32, and picked up 38 ground balls to the Bulldogs’ 22. The Saints won 15 of 28 faceoffs. Limestone’s Teddy Prager (Seaford, N.Y.) had six ground balls. Mike Medrano (Long Beach, N.Y.) was 10-20 in faceoffs and picked up four ground balls. Spencer Wims (Waltham, Mass.) had three caused turnovers. Goalkeeper James Tuohy (Levittown, N.Y.) posted 11 saves. Bob Chinn (Mooresville, N.C.) was 13-27 in face-off attempts for Wingate. He also had a game-high 11 ground balls. Goalkeeper David Suthers (Manassas, Va.) had 11 saves. |
Limestone travels to Laurinburg, N.C., to play Conference Carolinas-foe St. Andrews on Saturday, April 5 at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs head to Banner Elk, N.C., to face Lees-McRae on April 2 at 4 p.m. |
