LIMESTONE BEATS WINGATE 5-2

WINGATE, N.C.--The Limestone College baseball team picked up a 5-2 non-conference win against Wingate University. The Saints improve to 22-26 overall.

Senior outfielder Zach Watkins (Albany, Ga.) led the Saints, going two-for-five with an RBI and a run scored. Senior designated hitter Adam McSwain (Fallston, N.C.) also had two hits and an RBI while senior catcher Kyle Brewer (Gruetli-Laager, Tenn.) was one-for-three with two runs scored.

Freshman catcher Matt Crump (Matthews, N.C.) led the Wingate attack, going one-for-two with two RBI.

Limestone got on the board in the first, starting with an RBI single from senior first baseman Phillip Soden (Inman, S.C.). McSwain followed with another RBI single, making it 2-0. Two batters later, freshman infielder David Christy (Greenville, S.C.) plated Soden with a sacrifice fly for a three run lead.

The Saints got on the board again in the fourth when Brewer scored on an RBI single from junior outfielder Gregory Dailey (Baltimore, Md.). Limestone added another run in the sixth on an RBI single from Watkins, making it 5-0.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the eighth , when Crump delivered with a bases loaded two-run single to plate junior shortstop Alex Chapman (Morganton, N.C.) and sophomore outfielder Tayler Middleton (Hickory, N.C.), cutting the lead to three.

Senior right-hander Evan Denton (Gastonia, N.C.) got the win for Limestone, allowing two earned runs on four hits in 7.1 innings of work while striking out seven. Sophomore right-hander Brock White (Gaffney, S.C.) picked up his sixth save of the year. Redshirt junior right-hander Garret Kloots (Canton, Ohio) took the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing three runs in one inning while striking out one.

Limestone, seeded #6 in the upcoming Conference Carolinas tournament, will play Belmont Abbey on Thursday at 1 p.m. in the first round. The 2008 Conference Carolinas baseball tournament is hosted by Barton College in Wilson, N.C.
