LIMESTONE BASEBALL LOSES NO. 1 MOUNT OLIVE, 16-5

GAFFNEY, S.C.— The No. 1- ranked Mount Olive Trojans had 10 runs in the seventh inning en route to their 16-5 victory against Limestone College in Conference Carolinas baseball action on Saturday afternoon. Mount Olive climbs to 15-0 in league play (33-2 overall) as Limestone falls to 9-9 in the conference (18-17 overall).

Chris Zimmerman (Hendersonville, N.C.) took the loss after pitching the first six innings. He allowed eight hits, seven earned runs, and had four strikeouts. Marques Kyles (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Brock White (Gaffney, S.C.) both saw action for 1/3 of an inning. Kyle Matheney (Spindale, N.C.) pitched 1 1/3 innings, while Josh Troutman (North Augusta, S.C.) closed out the game.

Michael Williams (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) picked up the win after he allowed nine hits in seven innings.  He also struck out four batters.  Anthony Hernandez (Hubert, N.C.) and Paul Novicki (Pink Hill, N.C.) each pitched an inning in relief.

Limestone’s Phillip Soden (Inman, S.C.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Zach Watkins (Albany, Ga.) in the first. Drew Lydon (White Plains, Md.) scored in the second off a single from A.J. Bsharah (East Kentwood, Mich.) Kyle Brewer (Gruetli-Laager, Tenn.) got an RBI when Bsharah scored for the 3-0 lead.

The Trojans got on the board in the fourth, as Josh Harrison (Wake Forest, N.C.) doubled to right field as Erik Lovett (Goldsboro, N.C.) scored. Rich Racobaldo (Marlton, N.J.) hit a two-run double down the left field line to score Harrison and Jason Sherrer (Mesa, Ariz.) to tie the score.

Mount Olive took the lead on a two-run homerun by Jesse Lancaster (Goldsboro, N.C.) in the fifth.

In the bottom of the inning, Soden hit another sacrifice fly as Justin Moore (Mt. Holly, N.C.) reached home to put the Saints within one of the Trojans, 4-5. Limestone scored the game-tying run on a line drive to left center field by Adam McSwain (Fallston, N.C.) to drive in Watkins.

The Trojans sealed the win with ten runs in the seventh. Mount Olive scored the go-ahead run as Cooper reached home on a hit by Alex Vertcnik (Waukesha, Wisc.). Lancaster and Lovett scored on a wild pitches for the 8-5 advantage. Rocabaldo hit another two-RBI double. He went on to score on Dylan Holton’s (Nova Scotia, Canada) double. Cooper had a base hit to drive Holton home. Lancaster had a two-run homerun to clear out the bases. Vertcnik homered on the next at bat.

Mount Olive continued its scoring streak into the eighth when Rocabaldo doubled once more to score Sherrer.

Cooper hit 3-4 for Mount Olive with one RBI. Racobaldo was 3-5 with 5 RBIs, while Lancaster was 3-6 with 4 RBIs.

The Saints’ Watkins was 3-4 with 2 runs scored, while Soden led the team with 2 RBIs. Watkins and Izokovic each had a stolen base.

The Saints head to Mars Hill, N.C., on March 24 to face Mars Hill College at 3 p.m. Mount Olive hosts Catawba on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in Mount Olive, N.C.
