LENOIR-RHYNE RALLIES TO DEFEAT LIMESTONE 10-9 |
HICKORY, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne College baseball team (16-16) defeated Limestone College (18-14), 10-9, on Thursday afternoon at Bears Field on a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning by freshman shortstop Anthony Sully (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor HS). Sully drove in sophomore catcher Randall Shepherd (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach HS) with one out and the bases loaded to lift Lenoir-Rhyne to the win. The lead changed hands several times throughout the contest. Limestone scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning, highlighted by Adam McSwain’s (Fallston, N.C.) two-run home run, for an 8-6 advantage before L-R responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take back the lead at 9-8. The Saints tied the game at nine on McSwain’s sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning before Sully’s heroics won the game for the Bears in the ninth. L-R senior John Patterson (Hickory, N.C./East Carolina Univ.) notched the win and improved to 1-0 after pitching two scoreless innings. Limestone’s Jordan Liette (Versailles, Ohio) fell to 2-1 with the loss. Michael McAbee (Boiling Springs, S.C.) pitched the first three innings for the Saints and had four strikeouts. Josh Joseph (Axton, Va.) also saw action for 3 2/3 innings. Sully finished with four hits and two runs batted in while sophomore outfielder Evan Taylor (Charlotte, N.C./Independence HS) added three hits and two RBI as Lenoir-Rhyne defeated Limestone for the second time this year. McSwain led Limestone with three hits and five runs batted in. Right fielder Josh Izokovic (Shelby, N.C.) hit 3-5 with two runs scored and two doubles, and first baseman Phillip Soden (Inman, S.C.) was 4-5 with one RBI and three runs scored. Left fielder A.J. Bsharah (East Kentwood, Mich.) and catcher Kyle Brewer (Gruetli-Laager, Tenn.) also hit doubles, while Soden and Bsharah had one stolen base each. |
