WRESTLING RESULTS FROM LIMESTONE TRI-MEET; NO. 15 LIMESTONE BEATS UNC-PEMBROKE BUT LOSES TO WEST LIBERTY STATE |
GAFFNEY, S.C.— The No. 15-ranked Limestone College wrestling team picked up a win and a loss on Saturday afternoon at the Timken Center. The Saints (6-1 overall) were defeated by West Liberty State College 23-15, but Limestone recovered for a 19-15 victory against UNC-Pembroke. UNC-Pembroke (2-1) also picked up a win against West Liberty. West Liberty handed Limestone its first loss of the season, 23-15, in the day’s first match-up. The Hilltoppers won the first four matches to jump out to a 17-0 lead. Lucas Hoffman (Powhaton Point, Ohio) had a pair of takedowns in the first and second periods, and had another in the third on his way to an 11-4 win over Ian Barker (Summerville, S.C.) in the 125-pound division. Matt Mossor (Groveport, Ohio) had a trio of takedowns in his 8-1 victory against Brent Clausing (Miamisburg, Ohio) in the 133-pound weight class. Doug Surra (Kersey, Pa./141 lbs.) pinned Riley Pike (Alexander City, Ala.) to put his team up 13-0, and Kayne Melko (Bellaire, Ohio) defeated Dustin Baynes (Liberty Twp., Ohio) in the 149-pound class for the 17-0 advantage. Mikel Bush (Lakewood, N.Y./157 lbs.) got the Saints on the board with a 7-2 decision over Brian Leggett (Vienna, W.Va.). Casey Bradley (Muncie, Ind.) got Limestone’s second victory with a 4-0 shutout against Brandon Neifield (Hollywood, Fla.) at 165 lbs. Chris Gibbs (Huntington, W.Va./174 lbs.) defeated Joby Schreckhise (Grottoes, Va.) 4-1 to put West Liberty up 20-6. Limestone’s Dan Scanlan (Leesburg, Va./184 lbs.) had a technical fall against Joe Vigliotti (Burgettstown, Pa.), 18-3, but West Liberty’s Mitch Knapp (McConnelsville, Ohio) had two takedowns as he defeated David Bush (Lakewood, N.Y.) 5-1 in the 197-pound category. Saint heavyweight Trey Moss (Red Bank, S.C.) picked up a 12-0 major decision over Kevin Staub (Wheeling, W.Va.), but the win was too late for Limestone as the Saints lost 23-15. In the second contest of the day, UNC-Pembroke edged West Liberty 18-14.The Braves had two early decisions in the 125- and 133-pound weight classes as Joe Mavins (Orangeburg, S.C.) defeated the Hilltoppers' Huffman 6-1, and Mike Nash (Fayetteville, N.C.) won his match against Mossor 10-7. Surra defeated UNC-Pembroke's Brandon Bradley (Richmond, Va./141 lbs.) 7-2 to cut the Braves lead to 6-3. West Liberty's Melko tied up the score with a 3-1 win over Dennis Fix (North Huntington, Pa.) in the 149-pound weight class. UNC-Pembroke picked up wins in the 157-pound and 165-pound categories as Rashaad Saunders (Richmond, Va.) got an 11-6 decision over Leggett, and J.J. Davis (Spartanburg, S.C.) defeated Neilfield 8-1. West Liberty fought back as Gibbs got a technical fall against the Braves' Lennis Frazier (Havelock, N.C.) 19-1 in the 174-pound division, putting the Hilltoppers just one point behind UNC-Pembroke, 12-11. Derek Garris (New Bern, N.C.) gave UNC-Pembroke some breathing room with a decision against Vigliotti in the 184-pound ranks as the Braves' lead increased to 15-11. But, West Liberty's Knapp made things interesting with a 9-4 win over Timmy Allen (Mocksville, N.C.) at 197 lbs. to put the Hilltoppers within one point of UNC-Pembroke. West Liberty's Staub had a 2-0 lead over Eric Stancil (Raleigh, N.C.) after the first period, but Stancil recovered in the final period of the bout to get a 6-3 decision as the Braves won 18-14. In the day's final match-up, Limestone slipped past UNC-Pembroke 19-15. The Braves had a strong start early on, winning the six out of the first seven matches. Mavins defeated Limestone's John Harper (Walhalla, S.C.), 8-5, in the 125-pound weight class, as Nash defeated the Saints' Clausing 9-7. Bradley gave UNC-Pembroke the 9-0 advantage with a 6-3 victory over Pike. The Saints' first win came from Baynes who edged Fix, 3-2. The Braves got a pair of wins from Saunders at 157 lbs. and Davis at 165 lbs. to take the 15-3 lead. Limestone started to turn things around in the 174-pound competition as Schreckhise pinned the Brave's Frazier (1:42) to put the Saints within six points (15-9). Scanlan had a dominating 15-4 major decision against Frazier to cut UNC-Pembroke's lead to two (15-13), and Limestone's Bush beat Allen 6-1 at 197 lbs. to give his team the narrow 16-15 lead. With the match on the line, the Saints' Moss and the Braves' Stancil battled it out in the heavyweight division. Stancil led 1-0 after the second period and had an escape in the third, but Moss came up with a takedown and escape in the final period for the 3-2 victory and gave Limestone its sixth win this season. Limestone travels to the Ohio Northern Tourney in Ada, Ohio, on Saturday, December 15.
