LIMESTONE NAMES TRACK & FIELD COACH; VEES TO HEAD PROGRAM IN INAUGURAL SEASON

GAFFNEY, S.C.— Limestone College Athletics Director Mike Cerino has announced the appointment of Kevin Vees as the College’s Head Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Coach. The Saints track & field teams will begin competition in the spring of 2009. The program will be one of only four NCAA Division II programs in South Carolina and will compete in the Conference Carolinas.

“I am excited for the opportunity to be the first track and field coach at Limestone College,” said Vees. “I’m looking forward to building the team from the ground up.  I think that this is going to be great for South Carolina students because we will be one of the few Division II schools in the state to have a track and field program.”

Vees recently completed his third season as Head Coach of the Limestone College cross country programs.  Both the men's and women's teams have experienced great success under Vees' guidance.  The men's team finished seventh and the women’s team finished sixth at the 2007 conference championship. Both teams qualified for the NCAA Southeast Regional meet, with the men’s team placing 11th and the women’s team placing 12th. Both teams also earned their first regional rankings in program history this fall.

Vees also produced the first All-Conference and All-Regional runner for Limestone in Brent Clausing. Clausing finished 10th at the 2006 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference championship to earn Second-Team All-CVAC honors.  In the NCAA regional meet, Clausing finished 11th to become Limestone’s first All-Region runner. In 2007, three more athletes earned All-Conference Carolinas honors and Matt Conant placed 15th at the regional to become the second Limestone runner to be named All-Region.

Vees has also helped Limestone’s runners to success in the classroom. The men’s and women’s teams were named 2006 All-Academic Teams by the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.  Clausing and Dino Montagna were named to the 2006 Academic All-American team as a result of having a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher and placing in the top 30 percent at the region meet.

Vees, who also served as an assistant wrestling coach for the Saints from 2004-2007, graduated from Johnson & Wales University (Providence, R.I.) in 2003 with a bachelor of science in sport management. This past August Vees completed his masters of science in sport management studies from California University of Pennsylvania.

Vees will continue to serve as the Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach.
