LIMESTONE MEN’S SWIMMING FINISHES 2ND AT SCAD INVITATIONAL; LADY SAINTS TAKE 3RD

SAVANNAH, Ga.— The Limestone College men’s swim team finished second at the Savannah College of Art & Design Invitational while the Lady Saints finished third. The event was held at the Chatham Aquatic Center on November 30-December 2.

Over the course of the weekend, several Limestone swimmers recorded NCAA ‘A’ cut times to qualify to compete in the NCAA National Championships. On Saturday, the 400 medley relay team of Anders Melin (Karlstad, Sweden), Chad McKenzie (Durban, South Africa), Matt Parsonage (Durban, South Africa), and Craig Jordens (Cape Town, South Africa) had a time of 3:24.87 to win the event. McKenzie swam the 400 individual medley in 4:03.29, and Melin posted a time of 52.68 in the 400 backstroke. Melin also won the event.

Many of the Saints had NCAA ‘B’ cut times. On Saturday, Parsonage swam the 100 butterfly in 50.43. Jessi Sullivan (Lancaster, S.C.) had a time of 59.36 in the women’s 100 fly. She also took second in that event McKenzie swam the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.17 and also came in first place. Marija Grubic (Split, Croatia) swam the 100 back in 59.73 and also won that race. In Sunday’s preliminaries, Parsonage swam the 200 individual medley in 1:57.57. He swam the 200 butterfly final in 1:54.65. In the 100 breaststroke finals, McKenzie had a time of 58.82 for a ‘B’ cut. Jordens posted 46.61 in the men’s 100 free final.

In order to compete at the NCAA National Championships, a swimmer must have an ‘A’ cut time. If the swimmer also has a ‘B’ cut time in another event, he/she may also compete in the ‘B’ cut time event.

Other highlights from the SCAD Invitational included a first place performance by Marija Grubic (Split, Croatia) in the 200 back (2:10.64), and a win in the men’s 200 back by Melin (1:56.60), which also set a new meet record. The men’s 200 medley relay team of Melin, McKenzie, Parsonage, and Goran Majlat (Split, Croatia) set a new meet record with their first-place time of 1:33.64.

Limestone had a strong performance in Saturday’s final. The Lady Saints 400 free relay team of Arington, Reichwald, Grubic, and Pouchet finished third (3:46.14). In the men’s event, Jordens, Majlat, Melin, and McKenzie finished second in the men’s event (3:08.41). In the 200 yard medley final, Lady Saints Pouchet, Adams, Sullivan, and Grubic combined for a time of 1:55.44 for third.

McKenzie took second in the 200 IM (1:58.73), as Parsonage (1:56.69), and Karaman (1:57.98) finished third and fourth, respectively. McKenzie had a third place finish in the 100 breaststroke (58.82). Mead was third in the 500 free (4:52.38). Jordens was second in the 100 free (46.61) as Majlat was fifth (47.25).

Arington came in fourth in the women’s 200 backstroke (2:16.39). Grubic had a time of 55.10 in the 100 freestyle to finish fourth.

Limestone’s men’s team set four SCAD Invitational meet records on Saturday. The 400 medley relay team consisting of Melin, McKenzie, Parsonage, and Jordens had a time of 3:24.87. Melin swam the 100 back in 52.68, and Parsonage finished the 100 butterfly in 50.43. Melin, Jordens, Majlat, and Chad finished the 200 free relay in 1:25.11.

Limestone will have a break until January when the Saints travel to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the Bob Mowerson Swim Meet at the International Swimming Hall of Fame on January 5 at 3 p.m.
