BELMONT ABBEY UPSETS QUEENS IN CONFERENCE CAROLINAS SEMIFINAL, 14-10 |
GAFFNEY, S.C.— The Belmont Abbey men’s lacrosse team, seeded #3 in the Conference Carolinas tournament, upset #2-seeded Queens in the tournament’s semifinal match-up on Friday afternoon 14-10. The Crusaders improve to 8-4 with the victory as the Royals fall to 3-11. Belmont Abbey advances to play #1-seeded Limestone College in the tournament championship on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Saints Field. The 2008 Conference Carolinas men’s lacrosse championship is hosted by Limestone College. Belmont Abbey jumped out to the 5-0 lead after the first period, but Queens cut the Crusaders’ lead to 6-5 at the half as the Royals outscored BAC 5-1 in the second quarter. Belmont Abbey had the 3-1 advantage in the third, and had 5 goals to Queen’s 4 in the final quarter for the win. Queens had the 40-30 advantage on shots, a 36-23 advantage on ground balls, and won 17 of the game’s 28 faceoffs. The Royals were 3-5 on extra-man opportunities while Belmont Abbey was 1-2. Michael Brown (West Hartford, Conn.) led the Abbey with seven points from four goals and three assists. Jedd Gardner (Vestal, N.Y.) also recorded a hat trick in the win. The Crusaders’ Tristan Keas (Penn Yan, N.Y.) and goalkeeper Mark Kelske (Bohemia, N.Y.) each had five ground balls. Kelske posted 15 saves during the contest. Nick Mezzanotte (Belair, Md.) scored four goals for Queens and also dished out one assist. The Royals’ Mike Delallo (Syracuse, N.Y.) went 12-20 in faceoffs. Corey Thomas (Columbia, Md.) had six ground balls. Goalkeeper Brandon Macknew (Belair, Md.) had 11 saves in 56 minutes of work. Walter Bensten (Columbia, Md.) finished out the final 3 minutes in goal. Limestone College advanced to the championship game with a 19-3 win over St. Andrews in the day’s first semifinal contest. |
