SAINTS BASKETBALL STUNS PFEIFFER

GAFFNEY, S.C.— The Limestone College men’s basketball team celebrated its senior day with an 89-82 win against Pfeiffer University on Friday night at the Timken Center. The Falcons, ranked No. 4 in the latest NCAA Division II East Region poll, fall to 20-7 overall and 15-5 in the conference.  The Saints, who led the entire contest, improve to 10-16 overall and 7-13 in Conference Carolinas play.

Four of Limestone’s five seniors reached double scoring figures in the win. Kenny White (Columbia, S.C.) led the Saints with 16 points, as Jamison Clark (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and Andrae Franklin (Fort Pierce, Fla.) each scored 13. Marques Williams (Rochester, N.Y.) scored 10 points. Franklin and Williams each dished out four assists. Franklin had nine boards while Clark grabbed five rebounds. John Prioleau (Charleston, S.C.) had three rebounds, one block, and two assists for the night.

Andre Coleman (Clermont, Fla.) and Bobby Grier (Powder Springs, Ga.) had 12 points apiece for Limestone.

Pfeiffer was led by Alvin Slaton (Fayetteville, N.C.) who scored 18 points. Robert McGriff (Lancaster, S.C.) and Jeff Pettiway (Edgewood, Md.) both scored 14. Thomas Carr (Toledo, Ohio) added 12 while Derrick Truesdale (Waxhaw, N.C.) scored 10 points. Pettiway and McGriff each had four rebounds.

Limestone jumped out to an early 5-0 lead thanks to a three-pointer from Clark and a dunk by Franklin. The Saints had a 20 point lead with 3:29 left in the first period, but Pfeiffer cut the score to 44-31 at the half. Pfeiffer tried to mount a comeback in the second half, and managed to get within two points of the Saints with 4:47 left. But, Limestone came out strong for the remainder of the period for the 89-82 win.

The Saints were 64.3% from the field (27-42) as Pfeiffer only shot 42.2% (27-64). Limestone was also 10-of-19 from behind the arc (52.6%) compared to the Falcons 33.3% (9-27). The Saints out-rebounded Pfeiffer 38-27.

The 2007-08 Conference Carolinas men’s basketball tournament will begin on Monday, March 3.

Jamison Clark joined the Saints from St. Johns River Community College in Florida. During the 2005-06 season, he averaged 13 points and 3 rebound per game. As a freshman he averaged 12 points and 4 rebounds each contest. Since coming to Limestone for the 2006-07 year, Jamison has played in 29 games. This year, he scored season high 9 points against the Anderson University Trojans. A native of Fort Pierce, Fla., Jamison is the son of Annie and Robert Clark. He will graduate with a degree in sports management.

 

Andrae Franklin played at Indian River Community College in Florida before coming to Limestone for the 2006-07 season. Franklin helped Indian River to a third place finish in the state in 2006. In his first season as a Saint, he played in 15 games and recorded a season-high 10 points and 5 rebounds against Queens. This year, he’s reached double scoring figures on 13 occasions and has four double-doubles. He holds the Limestone single season record with 26 blocks achieved this year, and is ranked in the top 10 in the school season records with a field goal percentage of 57%, and with 163 rebounds. He is also tied for 7th in the Saints career records with 31 blocks. He was named Conference Carolinas Player of the Week on February 19. Andrae’s parents are Veryl and Venetia Moore, Originally from Fort Pierce, Fla., he will graduate with a degree in sports management.

 

John Prioleau played for Spartanburg Methodist from 2004-2006 before coming to Limestone last season. Last year, he led the Saints with 56 offensive rebounds and scored 188 points. He recorded nine rebounds against NCAA Division I foe East Carolina . This year, John recorded a double-double against Barton with a season-high 11 points and 10 rebounds. He leads the Saints with 51 offensive rebounds and is second on the team with 119 total rebounds. John is tied for 7th in the Limestone career records with 31 career blocks. A native of Charleston, S.C., he is the son of Sharon Evans and John Smith. He is majoring in business administration.

 

From Columbia, S.C., Kenny White is the only senior on the team to have played at Limestone for his entire college career. As a freshman, he saw action in 22 games and went 3-for-6 from long range for a season-high 9 points against Pfeiffer. In 2006-07, he scored over 10 points on four occasions. He recorded a season-high 14 points against Erskine and posted 90 points, 19 assists and 16 steals on the season. This year, he has scored in double-figures 13 times, including a career-high 18 points versus Belmont Abbey. Kenny is the son of Howard and Yvonne White and will graduate from Limestone with a degree in business administration.

 

Marques Williams was a two-time All-Region selection at Southwestern Community College in Iowa before transferring to Limestone for his junior season. At Southwestern, Marques averaged 14.9 points and 3.6 rebounds per game while ranking 9th in the nation with an 86.9 free-throw percentage. In his first season as a Saint, he led the team with a free-throw percentage of 85.1 and a 44.2 3-point field goal percentage. He reached double scoring figures 13 times and had a season-high 19 points against Belmont Abbey. This year, Marques is eighth in Conference Carolinas in scoring with 379 points and is fourth with 44 steals. Williams has reached double scoring figures 20 times this year. Marques is first in the Limestone single season records with an 86.2 free-throw percentage and 68 free-pointers made, both achieved during his senior season. He also ranks in the top 10 in the school single season records with 379 points and 44 steals. Marques is also first in the Limestone career records with his 85.71 free-throw percentage and is top 10 with 114 career 3-pointers. Originally from Rochester, N.Y., he is the son of Amy Brito and will graduate with a degree in physical education.
