COLEMAN’S BUZZER BEATER GIVES SAINTS 72-71 WIN AGAINST QUEENS |
GAFFNEY, S.C.—Andre Coleman (Clermont, Fla.) hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Limestone College Saints a 72-71 victory against Queens University on Monday night at the Timken Center. The Saints improve to 4-12 overall and 2-9 in Conference Carolinas play. The Royals slip to 13-5 overall and 8-3 in the league. Andrae Franklin (Fort Pierce, Fla.) led the Saints with 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Coleman scored 15 and had 3 steals. Marques Williams (Rochester, N.Y.) added 13 points. John Prioleau (Charleston, S.C.) posted 7 boards. Queens’ leading scorer was Andre Lockhart (St. James, Barbados) who had 15 points. Reggie Hopkins (Gastonia, N.C.) and Darnell Evans (Largo, Md.) each had 14, as Stephen Bailey (Fayetteville, N.C.) had 10. Bailey had a double-double as he also grabbed 10 rebounds. In the second period, neither team led by more than 4 points. Limestone had a 65-63 lead with 2:05 left in regulation, but Bailey was 1-for-2 in a free-throw attempts with 1:18 to cut the Saints’ lead to 1. Queens got a brief 66-65 advantage after a jumper by Hopkins 14 seconds later. Williams had a chance to put the Saints ahead with 2 free-throws attempts with 37.2 seconds remaining, and he hit both shots. The Royals didn’t give up, as Evans hit a 3-pointer for the 69-67 lead with 21.8 left on the clock. After a foul by Queens, Bobby Grier (Powder Springs, Ga.) went to the line for Limestone and nailed both shots to tie the game 69-69. With 12.1 seconds remaining, Lockhart nailed 2 free-throws for the Royals and Limestone called a timeout at 9.2. Limestone tried to set up a play, but the ball went out of bounds. The Saints retained possession, and Grier inbounded the ball with 2.0 seconds left. Grier found Coleman in the corner as Coleman sank a three-pointer for the 72-71 victory. It was a tight first half as there were six ties and nine lead changes, and there was never more than a six point difference in the score. Queens had a 32-29 lead with 1:15 left in the half, but a 3-pointer by Coleman tied the scored 32-32 heading into halftime. Limestone travels to play Pfeiffer on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Misenheimer, N.C. Queens hosts Pfeiffer on February 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Charlotte, N.C. |
