LIMESTONE BASEBALL DROPS 2 TO AUGUSTA STATE

GAFFNEY, S.C.—The Limestone College baseball team dropped two games to visiting Augusta State University on Saturday afternoon at Bob Prevatte Field. The Jaguars (3-3 overall) won the first game 7-2, and the second contest 9-6. The Saints stand at 3-2 with today’s losses.

In the day’s opening contest, Augusta State defeated the Saints 7-2. Steven Voit (Waverly, Ga.) got the win as Limestone’s Josh Joseph (Axton, Va.) took the loss after giving up 7 hits and 4 earned runs in the first four innings. Voit pitched the first seven innings, giving up 5 hits and striking out here batters. Jacob Watson (Marietta, Ga.) finished up the contest for ASU. Kyle Matheney (Spindale, N.C.) pitched four innings for Limestone and gave up 7 hits and had 3 strikeouts. Jordan Liette (Versailles, Ohio) gave up one hit in the final inning.

Limestone first baseman Phillip Soden (Inman, S.C.) and designated hitter Adam McSwain hit 2-for-4. McSwain had a homerun and 2 RBIs.

Jaguar right fielder Shannon Wilkerson (Dacula, Ga.) was 3-for-5 at bat, while second baseman Jorge Virguez (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was 2-for-5. Virguez and Jeremy Armstrong  (Evans, Ga.) both had 2 RBIs.

In game two, the score was tied 5-5 heading into the seventh inning. The Jaguars had four runs in the final inning and the Saints only scored one run as ASU walked away with the 9-6 win. Augusta State’s closing pitcher, Kyle Payne (Bradford, Ontario, Canada) picked up the win after pitching the final 3 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and three earned runs. Scott Strickland (Richmond Hill, Ga.), and Adam Mathis (Blairsville, Ga.) also pitched for the Jaguars.

Limestone’s Brian Baugher (Frederick, Md.) got the loss after he closed in the final 1 1/3 innings. He allowed two hits and four earned runs. Clayton Knight (Moncks Corner, S.C.) got eight strikeouts in the opening 5 2/3 innings and gave up 4 hits and one earned run. Brock White (Gaffney, S.C.) and Michael McAbee (Boiling Springs, S.C.) also pitched for the Saints.

Saint leftfielder A.J. Bsharah (East Kentwood, Mich.) had a homerun and a double to go with two RBIs while batting 2-for-3. Centerfielder Zack Watkins (Albany, Ga.), first baseman Phillip Soden (Inman, S.C.), and right fielder Josh Izokovic (Shelby, N.C.) all hit 2-for-4, with Watkins and Soden recording an RBI each. Soden and Izokovic hit doubles.

Augusta State’s Wilkerson, Clay Haynes (Gainesville, Ga.), and Tony Baker (Dacula, Ga.) all hit homeruns.  Baker led his team with four RBIs. Kevin Owens (Blaine, Wash.) and Wilkerson both hit doubles.

The Saints and the Jaguars conclude their series tomorrow when they play a single game at 1 p.m. at Bob Prevatte Field.
