SAINTS BASEBALL DEFEATS LYNCHBURG |
GAFFNEY, S.C.—The Saints baseball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 7-6 victory against Lynchburg College on Sunday afternoon at Bob Prevatte Field. The Hornets fall to 0-2 with the loss. Limestone pitcher Michael McAbee (Boiling Springs, S.C.) picked up the win after pitching the seventh inning as he recorded one strikeout. Kyle Elliott (Shelby, N.C.) finished off the game for the save as he gave up one hit. Josh Joseph (Axton, Va.), Kyle Matheney (Spindale, N.C.), Brian Baugher (Frederick, Md.), and Brock White (Gaffney, S.C.) also pitched for the Saints. Keith Yancey (Keysville, Va.) took the loss for Lynchburg after pitching the last 2/3 of the eighth inning. Conner Thompson (Solomons, Md.), Justin Ferrell (Red Oak, Va.), and Sean Campbell (White Plains, N.Y.) also saw time on the mound for the Hornets. Limestone scored the first two runs of the contest in the bottom of the third. Leftfielder A.J. Bsharah (East Kentwood, Mich.) singled to score shortstop Dylan Anthony (Lincolnton, N.C.) First baseman Phillip Soden (Inman, S.C.) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Bsharah later in the innings. Lynchburg tied the score in the fifth. Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, Va.) singled to score Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, Va.) Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, Va.) also scored for the Hornets. The Saints took the lead in the fifth as Bsharah recorded his second RBI of the day to score third baseman Matt Still (Moncks Corner, S.C.), but the visitors scored the equalizing point in seventh as Ronnie LaBrie (Vinton, Va.) hit a sacrifice fly for Grant to make it home. Limestone rallied in the eighth inning to score four runs to take the 7-3 lead. Centerfielder Zach Watkins (Albany, Ga.) hit a double to score pinch runner Tim Welsh (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Soden. Still singled to score catcher Kyle Brewer (Gruetli-Laager, Tenn.) Watkins came home on a wild pitch. Lynchburg tried to fight back in the ninth inning. The Hornets managed three runs as Taylor scored an unearned run and Jon Crews (Lynchburg, Va.) singled to bat in Bradley. Jeff Lincoln (Stafford, Va.) singled late in the inning to score LaBrie, but the Saints managed to hold on for the 7-6 win. Sharah and Watkins each had two RBIs for the Saints. LaBrie led Lynchburg with two RBIs. Limestone travels to Hickory, N.C., on February 6 to face Lenoir-Rhyne at 2 p.m. Lynchburg heads to Rocky Mount, N.C., on February 15 to face North Carolina Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m. |
