LIMESTONE TAMES COBRAS ON SENIOR DAY

GAFFNEY, S.C.-- The Lady Saints soccer team recorded their largest margin of victory of the season with a 7-0 win over Coker College on Saturday. Limestone improves to 4-2-3 in Conference Carolinas play (5-7-3) as the Cobras slip to 1-8-1 in the league (4-9-1 overall).

Saturday was Senior Day for Limestone as the Lady Saints recognized Brittany Owen (Pasadena, Md.), Kristina Silva (Pickering, Ontario, Canada), and Ashley Vaughan (Pickering, Ontario, Canada).

Lady Saint Shireen Bradford (Aberdeen, Scotland) scored the first goal of the game in the 4th minute as Lee Cribb (Spartanburg, S.C.) got the assist. With only 30 seconds left in the first half, Julie Koch (Knoxville, Tenn.) chipped the ball back to Savannah Evans (Athens, Ga.) who scored for the 2-0 lead

In the 49th minute, Coker's goalie was caught outside of the goal. Kristina Silva (Pickering, Ontario, Canada) took a shot that deflected off a Cobra defender. Ashley Vaughan (Pickering, Ontario, Canada) got a piece of the ball to give the Lady Saints a 3-0 advantage. Cribb scored for Limestone again minutes later. Alexis Brothers (Charleston, S.C.) converted a penalty kick to put Limestone up 5-0. Annie Polhamus (Fitzgerald, Ga.) scored the sixth goal of the contest. Koch blasted a shot from 25 yards out with six minutes left for the 7-0 victory.

Margaret McCoy (Columbia, S.C.) had eight saves for Coker.

Limestone's defenders allowed only one shot in the Lady Saints' fifth shutout this season. Limestone had a 22-1 advantage on shots and a 9-2 advantage on corners.

Limestone travels to Due West, S.C., on October 17 to face Erskine at 5 p.m.

Limestone honored its four seniors before the match: Brittany Owen, Kristina Silva, and Ashley Vaughan.

Limestone Head Coach Tina Weaver stated, “I feel privileged to have coached these three players for the past two years. They have discipline that will carry them far in life. Each senior possesses strong qualities that have gained them the honor of being team captain this year. Their roles on this team are a large part of the future success of this program.

These three seniors have been four-year starters for the Lady Saints. In 2006, they helped the team set a new school record with fewest losses in a season and most shutouts in a season. Owen, Silva and Vaughan have helped Limestone to 28 wins over the course of their careers.

 

Defender Brittany Owen, also known as "BO" to her teammates, has played in 68 games since 2004. She has recorded six career goals and two assists while anchoring the Saints defense. As a senior, she's helped Limestone's defense to a 1.64 GAA and four shutouts. Last season, she helped the Lady Saints to team goals against average of .99 and to a school record nine shutouts. As a sophomore, she played in all 19 matches and recorded seven points from three goals and an assist. Owen played in 18 games with 17 starts as a freshman. She tallied five points on two goals and an assist.

Her parents are Tom and Theresa Owen.

 

Kristina Silva joined the Lady Saints in 2004. As a midfielder, she has recorded six career goals and 10 career assists. Silva has played the most games of any Lady Saints on the current roster as she’s had 70 appearances. This season, she lifted the Lady Saints to their first win of the season over USC-Aiken on September 5 as she scored the contest’s only goal with half a minute left in the game.She also tallied assists againt Barton and Lees-McRae and scored a goal at Converse. As a junior, she played in all 19 matches as she recorded one goal and two assists. In 2005, Silva she started in 19 games and scored three goals and tallied six assists for 12 points. As a freshman, she was one of two Lady Saints to start in every game.

She is the daughter of John and Sylvia Silva.

 

Ashley Vaughan has been a regular in the Lady Saints starting lineup since she was a freshman, playing in 67 games. After playing as a midfielder from 2004-2006, Vaughan made the transition to defense as senior where she has helped Limestone to a 1.64 GAA and four shutouts. Her junior year, she had five goals and one assist in her 19 appearances. In 2005, she played in 16 games with two goals. In 2004, she started in 18 matches.

Her parents are Peter and Heather Vaughan.
