PEMBROKE, N.C.— The Limestone College wrestling team wrapped up competition at the Braves Classic on Saturday at the English E. Jones Center. The tournament was hosted by UNC-Pembroke. Several Limestone wrestlers had solid performances to place in the top 5 in their weight classes.
Joby Schreckhise (Grottoes, Va.) and Dan Scanlan (Leesburg, Va.) were third in the 174-pound and 184-pound weight classes, respectively. Heavyweight Trey Moss (Red Bank, S.C.) finished third. Brent Clausing (Miamisburg, Ohio/133 lbs.), Casey Bradley (Muncie, Ind./165 lbs.), and Kyle Elliott (Valdese, N.C.) finished 5th in their respective weight classes.
The Saints faced some tough competition as they competed against some of the best NCAA Division II teams in the region and several NCAA Division I schools.
Matt Hall (Hamptonville, N.C.) recorded two wins before being eliminated in the 125-pound weight class. John Harper (Walhalla, S.C.) also recorded a win in the same division.
In the 133-pound weight class, Pat Seidel (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) got three wins. Brent Clausing (Miamisburg, Ohio) defeated Seidel in the wrestleback and advanced to take fifth place.
Nathan Carmack (Miamisburg, Ohio) picked up two wins before losing in the consolation round of the 141-pound weight class. Joey Federspiel (Greenville, S.C.) took three wins and Jeremy Parker (Winchester, Va.) won once.
Dusty Leutz (Naples, Fla.) and Dustin Baynes (Liberty Twp., Ohio) each picked up a win in the opening rounds of the 149-pound category before appearing in the consolation round, where Baynes knocked Leutz out of the competition with a 6-4 decision. Baynes got two more victories before he was defeated by Dennis Fix (UNC-Pembroke). Jeremy McPhearson (Lancaster, S.C.) had three wins in the consolation round.
In the 157-pound class, Bryce Sopko (Brighton, Mich.) had two wins before losing a close 3-2 decision to Peter Rose of Southern Virginia. Mikel Bush (Lakewood, N.Y.) won his first match, but lost the second. In the wrestleback, he stayed alive with a win against UNC-Pembroke's Trey Kirkland, and then suffered a loss to Rashaad Saunders (UNC-Pembroke).
Casey Bradley (Muncie, Ind.) had two wins to start the day in the 165-pound weight class, but lost to J.J. Davis of UNC-Pembroke, 6-0. He had two wins in the consolation round to take fifth.
Joby Schreckhise (Grottoes, Va.) was on a roll with two wins, but lost to Davidson's Trevor Clavette, 13-2 in the 174-pound weight class. He defeated VMI's Dustin McCabe to finish third.
In the 184-pound category, Dan Scanlan (Leesburg, Va.) had four victories before dropping a match to John Barone of Duke University, 6-1. He won his lone wrestleback match to take third.
Donnie Gallup (Buford, Ga.) had a win in the 197-pound class. He went on to lose to David Bush (Lakewood, N.Y.) in the wrestleback, 13-2. Bush lost in the next round to The Citadel's Jon Buck, 7-4.
Heavyweights Trey Moss (Red Bank, S.C.) and Kyle Elliott (Valdese, N.C.) battled in the consolation to see which wrestler would advance to compete for third place in their weight class. Moss got a narrow 6-4 win and lost to Duke's Wade Van Sickle to take fourth. Elliott defeated Carson-Newman's Arthur Brown to finish fifth.
Participating teams at the 2007 Braves Classic included Campbell, Spartanburg Methodist, Davidson, VMI, Limestone, The Apprentice School, The Citadel, Carson-Newman, Cumberland University, Gardner-Webb, Anderson University, UNC, N.C. State, UNC-Greensboro, Southern Virginia, Belmont-Abbey, Cumberland College, Old Dominion, Newberry, Kings, and UNC-Pembroke.
