LIMESTONE WRESTLERS BATTLED TO 25-21 LOSS TO NO. 16 NEWBERRY; SAINTS RECOGNIZE MR. "G" ON SENIOR NIGHT

GAFFNEY, S.C.— The Limestone wrestlers battled hard but were edged by No. 16-ranked Newberry College, 25-21, on Thursday night at the Timken Center. Limestone’s record drops to 7-11 overall while the Indians improve to 15-5. The Saints’ Matt Hall, Dustin Baynes, Mike Bush, No. 7-ranked Dan Scanlan, and Trey Moss recorded wins.

Limestone heavyweight Trey Moss (Redbank, S.C.) got Limestone its first win of the evening with a 7-4 decision over Cy Wainwright. Matt Hall (Hamptonville, N.C.) followed with another win for the Saints in the 125-pound weight class as he pinned Willie Jarman in the second period to give LC the 9-0 lead. Hall had five takedowns in the first period alone.

Newberry cut Limestone’s lead to three as Pete Matsko pinned Nathan Carmack (Miamisburg, Ohio/133 lbs.) in the first period. The Indians took a 10-9 lead after Dwayne Tolleson recorded two takedowns and three near falls to beat Riley Pike (Alexander City, Ala.) 11-3 in the 141-pound division.

In the 149-pound weight class, Dustin Baynes (Liberty Twp., Pa.) and Latra Collick each scored five in a tight match up that saw Baynes win the contest with a  riding time of 1:84. Mike Bush (Lakewood, N.Y.) added another victory with a pin against Jesse Creed in the 157-pound weight class. Newberry’s Brandon Kelly increased the Indian’s team score to 13 with a 7-3 decision over Greg Satterfield (Hampton, Va./165 lbs.)

No. 7-ranked Quinn Tolbert gave his team a 19-18 advantage as he pinned Todd Neptune (Concord, Ohio) in the first period of the 174-pound competition. However, Limestone’s Dan Scanlan, the No. 7- ranked wrestler in the 184-pound weight class, defeated Keeno Griffin, 3-0, as the Saints retook the lead.  In the deciding match of the night, Kelly Anundson of Newberry pinned Mike Walsh for the 25-21 win in the 197-pound weight class.

Before the match, the Saints took time to honor their lone senior, Chris “G” Grenda, for his contributions to the team. “G” has been a member of the team since its inaugural season in 2004-05. While injuries have kept him from competing, he has been a fixture at matches, whether it’s announcing, helping set up, or offering encouragement. He has also helped tutor many of his teammates. “G” is a member of the honors program at Limestone and is majoring in pre-law. He is the president of the College’s Student Government Association and a member of the jazz band. A native of Brick, N.J., he is the son of Nancy Grenda.

Limestone heads to Jefferson City, Tenn., to participate in the Carson-Newman tourney on Saturday, February 10.
