LADY SAINTS LACROSSE DOMINATES FOR 20-3 WIN OVER BELMONT ABBEY TO ADVANCE TO CVAC CHAMPIONSHIP

GAFFNEY, S.C.—The Limestone College women’s lacrosse team dominated for a 20-3 win over Belmont Abbey in the semifinals of the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference tournament to advance to the championship match on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Limestone had a 12-1 lead at the half, and outscored the Crusaders 8-2 in the second for the win.

The Lady Saints won 17 of the 25 draw controls, and held a 45-11 advantage on shots.

Summer Ferraro (East Setauket, N.Y.) paced Limestone with five goals. Melissa Howard (Ferndale, Md.) and Shea Farrell (Blue Point, N.Y.) both recorded hat tricks, as Lauryn Wise (Pasadena, Md.), Marissa Pesce (West Babylon, N.Y.), and Renee Albro (Purcellville, Va.) each score twice. Katie Ilott (Whitbey, Ontario, Canada), Jessica Green (Rehoboth Beach, Del.) and Danielle Tosky (Bluffton, S.C.) also chipped in goals.

Kelly Lickert (Penn Yan, N.Y.) had four assists as Howard added three. Wise recorded two assists as Ferraro and Oterson dished out one assist each.

Erin Cavanaugh (Ellicott City, Md.) recorded seven saves for the Lady Saints. Terri George (Jordan, N.Y.) had four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Ferraro had four ground balls.

Meghan Darley, Laurie Jordan, and Chrissy Stokes scored for the Abbey.

Kate Gavin had seven saves for the Crusaders, and Sarah Popovich had three in the final 13 minutes for Belmont Abbey.

The Lady Saints wore orange and maroon ribbons in today’s game in respect for the victims of the Virginia Tech tragedy.

Limestone and Pfeiffer will face of in the CVAC Championship at 2 p.m. at Saints Field in Gaffney on Sunday. This is the fourth consecutive year these teams have met in the tournament final. Pfeiffer came away with the title in 2004 and 2005, while the Lady Saints claimed the championship last season.
