NO. 5 GANNON SLIPS PAST NO. 7 LIMESTONE IN WOMEN’S LACROSSE ACTION

ERIE, Pa.—In a game that never saw more than a two-goal difference, the No. 5-ranked Gannon University women’s lacrosse team slipped past No. 7 Limestone on Saturday afternoon for a 10-8 win. The Lady Saints fall to 12-3 overall as Gannon improves to 10-3.

Gannon scored the game’s first goal only four minutes into the contest. Limestone answered a minute later with a free-position goal from Renee Albro (Purcellville, Va.) Gannon’s Sara Belen gave her team a brief lead five minutes later, but Lauryn Wise (Pasadena, Md.) scored her first goal of the contest to equalize.

Gannon scored again with 14 minutes remaining, but Lady Saint Kelly Lickert (Penn Yan, N.Y.) evened the score once more. Taryn Millerd scored for the Knights, but Wise and Katie Ilott (Brooklin, Ontario, Canada) had back-to-back goals to give Limestone a brief lead. Gannon went on a three-goal run to enter halftime with a 7-5 lead.

Wise cut the score to 7-6 with 26:54 left in the second period off a pass from Lickert, but Gannon scored again for the two-goal advantage. Summer Ferraro (East Setauket, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal with nine minutes remaining to put the Lady Saints within one, but Gannon had two consecutive goals to put the score at 10-7. Wise scored her teams’ final goal of the contest with 2:56 left to play.

Gannon held the advantage on shots (19-13), ground balls (20-16), and draw controls (13-7).

Seven of Gannon’s players scored in the victory. Goalkeeper Acacia Cook recorded five saves.

Wise led the Lady Saints with four goals, while Albro had a team-high two assists. Goalkeeper Erin Cavanaugh (Ellicott City, Md.) had eight saves and six ground balls in the contest. Defender Chrissy Grogg (Taberg, N.Y.) had two caused turnovers.

Limestone travels to play CVAC-foe Pfeiffer on Tuesday in Misenheimer, N.C., at 4 p.m. The Lady Saints will host the CVAC tournament next weekend. The semifinal matches will be played at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Friday, with the championship game taking place on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Saints Field in Gaffney.
