JONES LEADS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PAST INDIANS, 64-59

GAFFNEY, SC – The Lady Saints basketball team gained momentum heading into the holiday break with a 64-59 win over the Newberry College Indians on Monday night.   Limestone’s Tiffany Jones (Greer, SC) led the Saints with 17 points on 6- of -12 (50%) from the field.  For Newberry, Tonique Frasier (Walterboro, SC) led all scorers with 25 points on 10- of -21 shooting (47.6%) and dominated the boards pulling down 15 rebounds on the night. The Saints jump to 5-6 overall with the win, the best start for Head Coach Cory Fox, now in his fourth season with the Saints.  Newberry drops to 7-3 on the season.

Lindsay Kyle (Springfield, VA) had 10 points and led the Saints on the boards with 6 rebounds.  Addie Graves (Columbia, SC), Essence Greer (Washington, D.C.) and Tierney Burdett (Peoria, Ill.) all added 8 points respectively.  Monica Adams (Kings Mountain, NC) added 6 points and 5 rebounds, while Greer also picked up 5 rebounds in the win.

Beyond Frasier’s double-double performance, Janine Ward (Tallevest, Fla.) added 9 points for the Indians.  Tacarra Harris (Tupelo, Miss.) contributed 7 points and 5 rebounds in the effort.

The Saints jumped out to a 4-0 lead until Newberry’s Ward sunk 2 free throws to cut the Saints lead to 4-2.  Limestone then went on a 6-0 run in the paint with Graves picking up two baskets and Lyons with one, five minutes into the first half.   After two minutes of scoreless basketball, Newberry went on a 16-5 run led by Frasier’s 9 first half points. Down 15-20 with 5:30 left in the first half, Limestone tied up the ballgame on a made jumper by Kyle, a lay-up by Jones and a free throw by Adams with the score at 20-20 with 3:51 on the clock.  The Saints took the lead on a lay-up by Adams, a 3-pointer by Jones, and another lay-up by Greer would put the Saints up 27-24 heading into the locker room at the break.  Limestone shot 48% from the field to Newberry’s 28%.

In the second half, the two teams kept it close until Limestone went on a 10-0 run to put them up 53-41 with 5:01 left in the game.  The Indians continued to make it interesting pulling within 3, but the Saints held on, shooting 7-8 from the free throw line in the last minute of play with Greer stepping up to hit the last two free-throws of the game to clinch the Saints win at 64-59.  Newberry shot 46.7% from the field while Limestone shot 34.5% in the second half. 

The Lady Saint’s will return to action on Saturday, December 29 hosting Conference Carolina foe, Converse College.  Tip off is set for 2:00 pm.
