BREVARD, NC – The Lady Saints basketball team posted a 73-63 win
over Brevard College on Saturday afternoon. The Saints advance to 3-6
overall, while Brevard dropped to 4-4 on the season.
The first 20 minutes of play saw both teams struggle to put points on
the board, as the Tornados couldn’t take care of the ball, committing
17 turnovers which limited them to only 18 shot attempts for the half.
While the Lady Saints out shot BC with 38 attempts of their own, they
were ice cold from the floor as they only made 11-of-38 attempts (28.9
percent) from the floor against a very aggressive Tornados’ defense
that forced nine turnovers and had five block shots.
Despite the turnovers, the Tornados once again were able to maintain
their lead in the first half from the free throw line, as BC made 13-of-16
attempts from the charity stripe to take a 31-26 lead into the halftime
intermission.
The second half of the contest was much different than the first, as
both teams came out shooting the ball well from all over the court.
After hitting only 28 percent of their shot attempts in the first half,
the Lady Saints shot 51.7 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes,
including going 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from behind the three-point arc.
The Tornados bounced back from a wild first half to shooting 47.6 percent
from the floor in the second half, connecting on 10-of-21 shot attempts.
In the first five minutes of play in the second half, the teams traded
the lead back-and-forth as neither team could put together a string
of baskets to run off with the lead. However, a jumper by Addie Graves
at the 14:47 mark gave the visiting Lady Saints a two-point lead which
they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.
The Tornados would get as close as eight points, 69-61, at the 1:16
mark but that was as close as they would get as Limestone would go 4-of-4
from the free throw line in the closing minute to seal the 73-63 victory.
BC was led by senior forward and co-captain Holly Krogman who recorded
a team high 23 points and seven rebounds for the day. Fellow senior
Courtney Brandon was the only other Tornado in double-figures as she
had 12 points. Off the bench freshman forward Kelsey Sill had a season-high
eight points.
Leading the way for Limestone College was Tiffany Jones (Greer, SC)
with 17 points, while Tierney Burdett (Peoria, Ill.) and Lindsay Kyle
(Springfield, VA) had 13 and 12 points, respectively. Shelly Robinson
(Belmont, NC), Addie Graves (Columbia, SC) and Ariel Lyons (Brandon,
FL) all added 7 points a piece for the Saints. Grave also grabbed a
team high 6 rebounds.
“I thought Jones played a phenomenal game offensively and Breanna
Ray (Spartanburg, SC) came off the bench and sparked the team’s
defensive effort which was the difference in the game,” commented
Coach Fox.
The Lady Saints will host North Greenville on Saturday with tip off
set for 5:30.
