LIMESTONE LOSES TO NEWBERRY, 77-62

NEWBERRY, S.C.— The Limestone College women’s basketball team struggled against Newberry College on Wednesday night as the Lady Saints lost 77-62. Newberry keeps its perfect record and is 8-0 overall with tonight’s win. Limestone falls to 1-7 overall.

Tiffany Jones (Greer, S.C.) and Blanca Gonzalez (Chicago, Ill.) each had 13 points for Limestone and Jones added five assists. Lindsay Kyle (Springfield, Va.) had a team-high eight rebounds for the Lady Saints while Monica Adams (Kings Mountain, N.C.) had seven boards and two blocks.

Newberry’s Monica Alexander scored 24 points and had five assists. Tonique Frasier had 18 points, Carnicha Bellinger scored 15, and Ashlee Wright added 11 more. Bellinger and Frasier each had five steals.

While the Lady Saints trailed the Indians for most of the first half, Limestone fought back to take the lead with less than two minutes left before halftime and ended the period with a 37-36 lead.

In the first half, Limestone had the edge with a field goal percentage of 54.5% (12-22) while Newberry only shot 43.2% from the field (16-37). The Lady Saints took advantage of free-throws, sinking 8-of-9 shots for a free-throw percentage of 88.9%.

Newberry took back the lead in the second period to win, 77-62. At the end of the contest, the hosts’ field goal percentage was 43.3% (29-67) compared to Limestone’s 42.6% (20-47).

Turnovers played a big role in the outcome, as Limestone committed 28 turnovers resulting in 28 points for the Indians. Newberry had 14 turnovers for the game.

Limestone takes a break before hosting Brevard on December 16 at 2 p.m.
