BANNER ELK, N.C.-- The Lees-McRae women's basketball team slipped
past Limestone College 71-68 on Wednesday night in Conference Carolinas
action. The Lady Saints stand at 9-8 in the league (14-13 overall) as
the Bobcats improve to 6-12 in the conference (7-17 overall).
Limestone's Ariel Lyons (Brandon, Fla.) had a double-double with 10
assists and 12 points. Lindsay Kyle (Springfield, Va.) led the Lady
Saints with 21 points. Essence Greer (Washington, D.C.) scored 11 points
and posted 8 boards.
For Lees-McRae, Stephanie Mullinax (Etowah, Tenn.), led all scorers
with 26 points and also picked up 8 rebounds. Cortney Furr (Concord,
NC) chipped in 14 points for the Lady Bobcats while sophomore Renee
Roberson (Salisbury, NC) and Jessica Lunsford (Elk Park, NC) also scored
in double digits recording 11 and 10 points respectively.
The teams traded baskets for much of the first half until the Saints
made a push with 11:16 on the clock. Leading 12-11 the Saints went on
a 6-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, seven points with
7:36 to play. The Lady Bobcats would respond with an 11-1 run to close
the half with a 22-19 advantage.
Building on the momentum they closed the first with, the second half
was all Lees-McRae. While the Saints hung around for the early part
of the second, the Lady Bobcats went on a 10-0 run with the score 31-30
to take a commanding eleven point lead, their largest of the game, with
13:02 to play. Playing with the lead, the Lady Bobcats allowed the Saints
back into the game as they slowly cut the deficit and regained the lead
65-64 with 1:27 to play. The Lady Bobcats would regain the lead on a
pair of free throws from Mullinax, making seven of eight down the stretch
from the charity stripe to seal the win.
The Saints will regain action on Saturday at Mount Olive; tip off is
set for 5:30 p.m. Lees-McRae will travel to Wilson, N.C. on Saturday,
to take on Barton College at 5:30 p.m.
