LADY SAINTS FALL SHORT TO MOUNT OLIVE, 49-60
Monica Adams Scores 1000th Career Point

GAFFNEY, SC – The Lady Saints basketball team fell short to the Lady Trojans of Mount Olive College, 49-60 in the Timken Gym on Saturday night.  Mount Olive’s Lakeisha Monroe (Cameron, N.C.) led all scorers with 17 points shooting 55% from the field.  For the Saints, Tierney Burdett (Peoria, Ill.) led the way, scoring 12 points off the bench.
The Saints drop to 8-9 overall, 3-4 in league play.  With the win, Mount Olive advances to 8-7 on the season, 5-2 in conference play.

One other Saint scored in double-digits, as Monica Adams (Kings Mountain, N.C.) picked up 11 points on the night, scoring her 1000th career point on a made free throw, five minutes into the second half.  Breanna Ray (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Tiffany Jones (Greer, S.C.) both added 7 points respectively.  Lindsey Kyle (Springfield, Va.) and Essence Greer (Washington, D.C.) both pulled down 6 boards a piece.

Tomeka Prichard (Havelock, N.C.) contributed 12 points and 5 rebounds for the Trojans.  Helen Moore (Kenly, N.C.) paced the Trojan defense with 7 steals; she also added 9 points in the win.   Keona Corley (Lillington, N.C.) also had a strong performance with 7 points and 6 rebounds.

The Saints were down by as many as 7 early in the first half, but cut the Trojan lead to 2 (11-13) with ten minutes to go.  After trading a few baskets, Limestone took the lead (15-14) on an offensive rebound and put back by Addie Graves (Columbia, S.C.).  Mount Olive regained the lead (20-18) with 3:48 to go on a fast break by Prichard.  Monroe gave the Trojans a 4 point cushion on two made free throws, but Limestone’s Burdett would answer with a lay-up on the other end to cut the Trojan lead to 2 with just 1:30 on the clock. After a made free throw by Ray, and a 3-pointer by Burdett, the Saints found themselves up 24-22 with just a minute left.  Monroe quickly pushed the ball up the court and tied the score at 24 with a lay-up.   Sierra Medieiros (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) was called for a foul with just 2 seconds on the clock, and Limestone’s Jones sunk both free throws to put the Saints up 26-24 at the half.

In the second half, the Trojans held the Saints scoreless for the first 4 minutes of play and regained the lead at 28-26.  A made free throw by Adams would put Limestone within one point (27-28), but the Trojans answered with a 12-0 run lead by Monroe and Corley. Another Burdett 3-pointer stopped the run and cut the Trojan lead to 9.  Ray hit a 3-pointer and a lay-up, which sparked a 14-5 run for the Saints, to tie the score at 45 all with just 5:47 left in the game.  The Trojan defense would once again cause trouble for the Saints, only scoring 1 point to Mount Olives’ 9.  The Trojans took the win 60-49.

The Saints shot 34.1% from the field and 68% from the free-throw line.  The Trojans shot 37.7% from the field and 57.6% from the free throw line.

Limestone will travel to Laurinburg, N.C., on Monday, January 21 to take on St. Andrews College at 5:30 pm.  The Trojans will host Belmont Abbey on Monday, January 21 at 2:00 pm.
