LIMESTONE VOLLEYBALL SPLITS IN SEASON OPENER AT AUGUSTA STATE INVITATIONAL

Augusta, GA – The Limestone College volleyball team opened the 2007 season with  a 1-1 split at the Augusta State Invitational today defeating Clark Atlanta University 3-0 and dropping the night cap to Florida Tech 1-3.

“I was happy with Chelsea Anthony who stepped up and played well as our libero and I was also pleased with Laura Kerrison, who did a tremendous job running the offense in her first match as a college setter,” commented Coach Loesch.  Loesch also felt like Melissa Thomas and Sam Flannery were both very aggressive and consistent as hitters for. 

In game one, the Saints defeated Clark Atlanta University 30-17, 30-25, and 30-28 as Junior Sam Flannery smashed10 kills on 22 total attacks with only 1 error.  Freshman Laura Kerrison made her college debut with 15 assist along with Freshman Jennifer O’Keefe who ended the match with 7 kills on 16 total attacks.  Junior Melissa Thomas had five kills and Senior Ashley Hubbard went 6 for 11 with only two errors and had five digs.  On the defensive end sophomore libero Chelsea Anthony picked up 12 digs and 3 service aces, Thomas and Hubbard added 6 and 5 digs respectively in the effort.

In game two, the Saints fought hard but fell to Florida Tech 30-27, 27-30, 19-30 & 20-30.

Flannery once again led the Saints offense with 18 kills (.256) with Thomas close behind adding 15 kills (.326) in the loss.  Kerrison ended the match with 38 assists.  Anthony led the defensive effort with 23 digs, while sophomore Courtney Taotoai picked up 20 digs. 

The Lady Saints will take on Newberry College tomorrow morning at 8:00 am and will finish the tournament taking on the host, Augusta State at 12:00 noon.
