GAFFNEY, S.C.—The Limestone College men’s soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to Belmont Abbey in the first round of the Conference Carolinas tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Saints Field. The Crusaders push on to the next round of the tournament with a 13-8 overall record as Limestone stands at 10-6-1 this season. Belmont Abbey was awarded a penalty kick in the 26th minute. Saint goalkeeper Ryan Robinson (Snellville, Ga.) got a piece of Kyle Fenner's (Dallas, Texas) shot, but the spin of the ball took it back into the net for the Crusaders' 1-0 lead. Stuart Wright (Newcastle, England) crossed the ball into the box trying to set up a scoring chance for Limestone in the 75th minute, and an own goal by Belmont Abbey tied up the score, 1-1. Belmont Abbey’s Daniel Morrison (Dallas, Texas) scored the golden goal off a cross with five seconds left on the clock in the first overtime period for the 2-1 win. Limestone outshot the Abbey 15-13 during the contest, and each team had eight corner kicks. Robinson had two saves for the Saints while Bryan Alenky (Plano, Texas) had three for the Crusaders. The Crusaders advance to the tournament semifinals where they will face the winner of the Erskine/Lees-McRae game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Mount Olive, N.C. |
