SOFTBALL DROPS A PAIR TO LENOIR-RHYNE

GAFFNEY, S.C. - The Limestone College softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday at Lady Saints Field.  The 2008 South Atlantic Conference regular season champs defeated Limestone 8-0 in game one and 10-2 in the night cap.  The Saints fall to 21-33 with the loss.  The Lady Bears improve to 41-10 on the season.

In game one, the Bears got on the board in the top of the second on a two-run homer by Leah Krohn (Taylorsville, N.C.).  Lenoir-Rhyne came alive in the third inning, scoring six runs.  Karie Pushard (Harrisburg, N.C.) hit a home run with no one on base to start the hitting spree.  Kat Rivers (Royston, Ga.) had an RBI single and Brittney Haithcock (Snow Camp, N.C.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Rivers.   Brittany Cherry (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) doubled for three RBIs, putting her team up 8-0 to take the win in five innings.

Lisa DeMarr (Alpharetta, Ga.) took the loss from the mound, falling to 5-11 on the season.  Meredith O’Conner (Charlotte, N.C.) improved to 29-7 with the win.

In the night cap, it was Limestone who scored first on a home run by Samantha Weaver (Emmitsburg, Md.) in the bottom of the second.  Lenoir-Rhyne put up five runs in the fourth, with Lauren Johnson (Chesterfield, Va.), starting things off on an  RBI single. Chelsea Elmore (Belmont, N.C.) picked up an RBI double for the second run.  Cherry doubled to bring in two runs, and Noel Belk (Charlotte, N.C.) finished the scoring run with an RBI single.  In the top of the fifth, the Lady Bears hung up five more runs as Johnson and Cherry  picked up two more RBIs a piece both connecting for a single. Belk wrapped things up again with an RBI single to put the Bears up 10-1.  Limestone’s Chelsea Anthony (Pickens, S.C.) hit a home run in the bottom of the fifth,  but it wasn’t enough for the Saints, who dropped the night cap in five innings, 10-2.

Emily Wallace (Winchester, Ky.) took the loss falling to 13-15 on the season.  Morgan Vickers (Randleman, N.C.) picked up the win, improving to 4-1.

Both teams will resume action again in their conference tournament’s beginning on Thursday.  Limestone will play in Hillcrest, S.C., in the Conference Carolinas tournament and Lenoir-Rhyne will play in the SAC tournament hosted by Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.
