GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Limestone College softball team split a doubleheader with non-conference rival North Greenville University on Friday at the Lady Saints Field. The Saints took the first game 4-2 and lost the nightcap 0-3. With the split, the Saints improve to 19-23, while the Crusaders now stand at 12-16.
In game one, the Crusaders scored first in the top of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by lead-off hitter Christina Shin (Lyman, S.C.), which scored Shealy Broome (Clinton, S.C.). Limestone answered in the bottom of the inning as Felicia Fritz (Muncie, Ind.) bunted to get on base, and after a pair of stolen bases and a throwing error on NGU’s catcher, Fritz crossed the plate to put the first run on the board for the Saints. NGU would score again in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Lindsey Eargle (Newberry, S.C.) to score Bridget Watson (Welford, S.C.).
Brittany Owen (Pasadena, Md.) started the Saints off in the bottom of the sixth with a standing triple. Jessica Brown (Inman, S.C.) reached on a fielder’s choice, but North Greenville’s Kristyn Smith (Walhalla, S.C.) committed a throwing error at the plate and Owen’s run tied the game at two. Samantha Weaver (Emmitsburg, Md.) doubled to drive in two runs to put the Saints up 4-2. Limestone’s pitcher, Emily Wallace (Winchester, Ky.), was responsible for all three outs in the top of the seventh, making the play at first for the first out and striking out the next two batters to end the game.
Wallace was credited with the win, improving to 11-10 on the season. NGU’s Smith took the loss.
In the nightcap, both teams were scoreless until NGU’s Lindsey Eargle doubled for an RBI and Allison Bailey (Jefferson, S.C.) hit a two-run homer to put her Crusaders up 3-0 in the top of the sixth.
North Greenville’s Krista Yeoman (Irmo, S.C.) got the win. Limestone’s Lisa DeMarr (Alpharetta, Ga.) picked up the loss, falling to 5-8 on the season.
The Saints will host Lincoln Memorial tomorrow, with the first pitched scheduled for 1:00 p.m. North Greenville will travel to Hartsville, S.C., for a double-header with Coker College.
