LIMESTONE SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH NEWBERRY

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Limestone College softball team split a double-header with Newberry College on Tuesday. Limestone took game one 7-4, on a seventh inning grand slam by Jordan Goodman (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada). Limestone dropped the second game 8-2. The Saints now stand at 9-16 and the Indians are 12-10 overall.

In game one, Newberry entered the seventh inning with a 3-1 lead, but the Saints scored six runs including four on a two-out grand slam by Goodman.

The Lady Indians took a 1-0 lead in the fourth and added two more to their score in the fifth. The Saints looked to take the lead in the sixth scoring one run and loading the bases but Newberry’s Hicks entered the game in relief and struck out two Limestone batters to get out of the jam.

In the top of the seventh, the Saints loaded the bases with two singles by Felicia Fritz (Muncie, Ind.) and Christina Woolgar (Orangeville, Ca.); then Lauren Robertson (Cincinnati, OH) was walked. An RBI single by Jessica Brown (Inman, S.C.) started the scoring run, and Brittany Owen (Pasadena, Md.)was hit by the pitcher to bring in Robertson and tying the game at three. Goodman put Limestone up for good with a drive over the left field fence.

Newberry got one run back on a single, a sacrifice bunt and another single, but the Lady Indians were unable to get anymore as the next batter grounded out to second to end the game.

Newberry’s Hicks (7-3) was charged with the loss after allowing six earned runs in the seventh inning. Robertson (2-5) got the win in relief after going two innings and allowing just one run.

In the nightcap, an eight run second inning was all that the Lady Indians would need to take game two 8-2. The Newberry rally in the second inning put them up 8-0 early.

The Saints were held to just one hit through the first four innings but they broke through in the fifth with a single by Goodman. Mary Sheldon (Port Charlotte, Fla.) singled to centerfield to bring in 2 RBI’s.

Newberry’s Edwards pitched seven innings to record the win from the mound, improving to 5-7 on the year. Emily Wallace (Winchester, Ky.) went the distance in the game but picked up the loss for Limestone, falling to 3-7 on the season.

Fritz and Woolgar were 3-7 for the day; Goodman was 2-6 with 4 RBI’s. Sheldon had 2 RBI’s for the Saints.

The Saints will travel to Anderson, S.C. for a Conference Carolinas double-header with Anderson University on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
