| SPARTANS SWEEP SAINTS IN SOFTBALL ACTION |
GAFFNEY, S.C.-- The USC-Upstate Spartans swept the Limestone College softball team in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Lady Saints Field. USC-Upstate won the first game 12-3 and the second contest 14-1. Limestone is off to a 0-2 start for the season while the Lady Spartans stand at 4-0. In the day’s first game, USC-Upstate scored six runs in its first at bat. Limestone responded with one run in the bottom of the first. The Spartans took a 7-1 lead in the third, but the Lady Saints scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the visitors’ lead to 7-3. LC wouldn’t score for the remaining of the game as USC-Upstate had two more runs in the fourth and three in the seventh for the win. Catcher Jessica Brown (Inman, S.C.) and pitcher/first baseman Candice Evans (Lexington, S.C.) had four put outs for the Lady Saints. Evans had two RBIs and a double, and third baseman Brittan Owen (Pasadena, Md.) scored two runs. Jamie Amerine had four RBIs for USC-Upstate, while Ashleigh Beck had three. Vanesa Flores had one RBI and Tiffany Pitcher and Katie Adams had one each. Three Lady Spartans hit home runs. Lisa DeMarr (Alpharetta, Ga.) got the loss for Limestone, while Emily Jeffery picked up the win for the Spartans. Jeffrey had six strikeouts as Brittany Rice had four. The Lady Spartans got started scoring early in the second game, too. USC-Upstate scored four runs in the first inning followed by eight runs in the second. Limestone managed to score its only run in the bottom of the first. USC-Upstate scored two runs in the fifth for the 14-1 win. Adams and Heidi Gibbs were both 2-for-3 at bat, while Pitcher went 3-for-4. Pitcher led her team with four RBIs, Amber Patterson had three, while Flores and Gibbs each had two. Beck had seven putouts during the contest. Limestone’s secondbaseman Christian Woolgar (Orangevale, Calif.) had the team’s only RBI. Jessica Jolly pitched the complete game for USC-Upstate, getting one strikeout. Jennifer Casement (Peterborough, Ontario, Canada) was credited with the loss as she had three strikeouts. The Lady Saints travel to Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, N.C., on Sunday, February 18. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
