NO. 15 LIMESTONE SHUTS OUT NO. 21 NEWBERRY, 3-0 |
GAFFNEY, S.C.—The No. 15-ranked Limestone College men’s soccer team got its first shutout of the season with a 3-0 win over No. 21 Newberry College on Wednesday afternoon at Saints Field. Limestone improves to 2-0 with the win as the Indians fall to 2-1. “I was very pleased with today’s effort,” said Limestone Head Coach Eric Alsop. “Our defenders did an outstanding job. Newberry has two very dangerous forwards and our back line did its job. “Today’s win started with the defense and built through to the offense,” Alsop continued. “We had a great showing we can build on.” Limestone had a 2-0 advantage at halftime. Early in the period, Stuart Wright (Newcastle, England) served the ball into the box. Tom Beattie (Goole, England) headed the ball as Ali Benson (Hull, England) got a piece of it to score his second goal of the year. Griffin Roxbury (Tucson, Ariz.) scored in the 32nd minute as Benson and Beattie picked up assists. Benson scored the Saints’ third goal with nine minutes left to play on a fast break off a pass from Brian Hurlburt (Coppell, Texas). Limestone’s defense only allowed five shots on goal for the entire contest. The Saints had eight corner kicks to the visitor’s one. “We were solid as a team,” said Limestone defender Matt Finlay (Liverpool, England). “This is the first of many clean sheets for us this year.” Limestone goalkeeper Ryan Robinson (Snellville, Ga.) had five saves for the match as Will Dietrich recorded four for the Indians. Limestone hosts USC-Aiken on Wednesday, September 5 at 4 p.m. at Saints Field in Gaffney.
