SAINTS BASEBALL HANGS ON FOR 9-8 WIN OVER WINGATE |
WINGATE, N.C.—The Limestone College baseball team and Wingate University battled for nine innings, but the Saints edged the Bulldogs 9-8 at Christopher Stadium on Tuesday evening. Limestone wraps up its season with a 21-30 record as Wingate stands at 24-31. Tyler Anderson (Kershaw, S.C.) got the win for Limestone as Alex Dergins (Morganton, N.C.) got the save. Daniel Phillips (Gaffney, S.C.) and Kyle Matheney (Moncks Corner, S.C.) also pitched. Wingate scored two runs in the bottom of the first, but Limestone cut the Bulldogs’ lead to one as Tyler Midgett (Summerville, S.C.) doubled to score Phillip Soden (Inman, S.C.). The hosts scored another run in the second, but Limestone took the 4-1 lead in the third. Kyle Brewer (Gruetin-Laager, Tenn.) tripled to center field to score Paul Irby (Edgemoor, S.C.). Zach Watkins (Albany, Ga.) followed up with another triple as Brewer scored, and Watkins had the Saints’ final run of the inning on a wild pitch. The Saints had two more runs in the fourth as Brewer recorded another RBI as Matt Craig (Lincolnton, N.C.) reached home. Watkins also batted in Irby. Wingate scored again in the fourth and fifth to even the score. Limestone came out strong in the seventh as the team recorded three runs for the 9-6 lead. Soden singled to score Justin Moore (Mount Holly, N.C.). Craig doubled to bat in Soden and Taylor Cook (Houston, Texas). Wingate tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth with two more runs, but the Saints got three straight outs against the Bulldogs in the ninth for the victory. |
