LIMESTONE BASEBALL BATTLES TO SPLIT WITH ST. ANDREWS |
LAURINBURG, N.C.—The Limestone College baseball team played two extra-inning games on Saturday to pick up a win and a loss against conference-foe St. Andrews on Saturday afternoon. The Knights edged the Saints 1-0 in the opening contest that took 11 innings to decide. The Saints picked up a 10-9 victory over SAPC in game 2 as Limestone scored the winning run in the eighth following the seven scheduled innings. Limestone stands at 20-29 after today’s results (7-15 CVAC) as the Knights climb to 14-34 overall (4-19 Limestone had 10 hits to St. Andrews’ seven in game one, but St. Andrews scored the winning run in the 11th inning as Rodriguez scored an unearned run after a Saint error. Chris Zimmerman (Navarres, Fla.) didn’t give up any runs in the first eight innings as he had four strikeouts. Alex Dergins (Morganton, N.C.) got the loss after pitching 2 1/3 innings. Daniel Phillips (Gaffney, S.C.) also pitched. Ryan Kirkman got the win for the Knights after playing the final 2 1/3 innings and posting five strikeouts. Limestone scored in the first inning of the second game after shortstop Dylan Anthony (Lincolnton, N.C.) stole third base and then scored on a throwing error by SAPC’s catcher. St. Andrews evened the score with a run in the second, and took a 3-1 lead after the third. The Saints jumped ahead in the fifth. Anthony singled through the right side to score outfielder Zach Watkins (Albany, Ga.) First baseman Phillip Soden (Inman, S.C.) singled as Anthony scored for the second time in the game. Designated hitter Adam McSwain (Fallston, N.C.) hit a double to score Soden, and Matt Still (Moncks Corner, S.C.) also doubled to score McSwain. Matt Craig (Lincolnton, N.C.) homered for Limestone’s sixth run of the inning. The Knights tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and another in sixth. But, the Saints came through in the eighth inning. Watkins scored after the Knights’ pitcher walked pinch hitter Taylor Cook (Houston, Texas). Still batted in two runs as he singled later in the inning. St. Andrews only managed two runs in the bottom of the inning as Limestone won 10-9. Tyler Anderson (Kershaw, S.C.) pitched the first 4 2/3 innings for Limestone, but Brian Baugher (Frederick, Md.) got the win as he pitched the next three innings. Anderson and Dergins each recorded four strikeouts. Dergins was credited with the save. Kirkman was tagged with the loss. Anthony was 3-for-5 while McSwain as 3-for-4 in game two. Three Saints recorded two hits. Limestone is scheduled to play St. Andrews again tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Laurinburg, N.C.
