LIMESTONE BASEBALL EDGES PFEIFFER

GAFFNEY, S.C.—Limestone catcher Kyle Brewer’s homerun in the bottom of the eighth was enough to score two runs to lift the Saints to a 7-6 win over conference-rival Pfeiffer University on Sunday afternoon at Bob Prevatte Field. Limestone improves to 4-7 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference play (17-15 overall), as the Falcons slip to 8-7 in the CVAC (14-16 overall).

Pfeiffer scored a run in the first inning, but Limestone responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a brief lead. The Falcons scored four runs in the second. Limestone chipped away at the visitor’s lead with a run in the third and another in the fifth to tie the game. The Falcons had a 6-5 advantage after the seventh, but the Saints’ Brewer (Greutin-Laager, Tenn.) hit a homerun to also score Paul Irby (Edgemoor, S.C.) for the victory.

Saints reliever Daniel Phillips (Gaffney, S.C.) got the win as Alex Dergins (Morganton, N.C.) picked up the save. Brian Baugher (Frederick, Md.) pitched the first five innings, striking out five batters. Ryan Maxa (Sarasota, Fla.) also pitched.

Limestone center fielder Zach Watkins (Albany, Ga.) was 2-for-5 with a stolen base. First baseman Phillip Soden (Inman, S.C.) had an RBI and two stolen bases. Designated hitter Tyler Midgett (Summerville, S.C.) had two RBIs for the day. Irby was 2-for-4 with an RBI while left fielder Joey Asis (Gastonia, N.C.) had a double.

Pfeiffer’s Chris Russell was tagged with the loss. The Falcons’ right fielder Ryan Harju was 2-for-4 with a double, while Kyle Pugh was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

Limestone hosts Erskine College in a non-conference game on Monday at 2 p.m. at Bob Prevatte Field.
