LIMESTONE COMPLETES SWEEP OF OHIO VALLEY WITH 8-3 VICTORY |
GAFFNEY, S.C.— The Saints baseball team completed its four-game sweep of Ohio Valley University with an 8-3 victory on Friday afternoon. Limestone improves to 13-10 for the season as the Fighting Scots fall to 2-10. Tyler Anderson (Kershaw, S.C.) only allowed two hits and one run in eight innings as he got the win for the Saints. Daniel Phillips (Gaffney, S.C.) and Alex Dergins (Morganton, N.C.) also pitched. Ohio Valley’s Jesse Young was tagged with the loss. Limestone opened the game with three runs in the first. Designated hitter Adam McSwain (Fallston, N.C.) doubled to score outfielder Joey Asis (Gastonia, N.C.) and second baseman Daniel Lydon (White Plains, Md.). McSwain scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Phillip Soden (Inman, S.C.) In the second, Paul Irby (Edgemoor, S.C.) singled, stole second base, and then got to third on a passed ball. Short stop Dylan Anthony (Lincolnton, N.C.) grounded out as Irby scored for the 4-0 lead. Irby singled in the third to score Soden and McSwain. The Fighting Scots got on the board in the fourth from D.J. Schreckengost’s home run. Limestone responded as outfielder Zach Watkins (Albany, Ga.) scored from third on an error by Ohio Valley’s first baseman. Irby continued to play well a he built the Saints lead to 8-1 with his home run in the seventh. Ohio Valley tried hard for a rally in the top of the ninth, as the Fighting Scots scored two runs, but the Saints’ Alex Dergins came in to finish off the inning as he struck out OVU’s batter for the third out. Irby was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Saints with three RBIs. Asis was 2-for-3, while Lydon was 2-for-4. Ohio Valley’s Sam Schmitt led his team with two hits. Limestone hosts Bryant University in a three-game series this weekend. Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m., and Sunday’s game will start at 1 p.m.
