BELMONT, N.C.— The Limestone College baseball team picked up a win and a loss against Belmont Abbey in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference play on Saturday. The Saints won the first game 6-5, but lost the second contest 14-4. Limestone stands at 8-9 overall and 2-5 in the CVAC, as Belmont Abbey climbs to 11-8 overall and 5-3 in the CVAC. Belmont Abbey scored the first run of the day in the first, but Limestone responded in the second to tie the game. The Saints scored two runs in the third and added three more during the fourth. The Crusaders tried to rally late in the game with three runs in the eighth and another in the ninth. Starter Brian Baugher (Frederick, Md.) got the win for Limestone as he pitched the first 7 1/3 innings, striking out six batters. Daniel Phillips (Gaffney, S.C.) got the save as he finished out the game for Limestone. Jeremy Riggs (Suffolk, Va.) also pitched in the win. Helms was tagged with the loss. Designated hitter Adam McSwain (Fallston, N.C.) and catcher Tyler Midgett (Summerville, S.C.) both hit homeruns in the contest. McSwain was 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs, while Midgett was 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Center fielder Zach Watkins (Albany, Ga.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while left fielder Joey Asis (Gastonia, N.C.) was 3-for-5 and scored one run. First baseman Phillip Soden (Inman, S.C.) had a stolen base. Midgett led the Saints with six putouts. Belmont Abbey got off to good start in game 2, as the Crusaders scored four runs in the first and another four in the third. Limestone scored a run in the fourth and sixth, and had two runs in the fifth but couldn’t come up with the runs to match the Abbey’s. The Crusaders also scored two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one in the sixth. The Saints were 6-for-28 at bat, while Belmont Abbey was 21-for-37. Limestone shortstop Dylan Anthony (Lincolnton, N.C.) was 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run. Second baseman Daniel Lydon (White Plains, Md.) was also 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kyle Brewer (Greutin-Laager, Tenn.) had a homerun for the Saints. Ryan Maxa (Sarasota, Fla.) got the loss for Limestone. Shane Suter (Woodbury, Pa.), Kyle Matheney (Spindale, N.C.), and Clayton Knight (Moncks Corner, N.C.) also pitched. BAC’s Cline was credited with the win. The Saints will play Belmont Abbey again tomorrow in Belmont, N.C., at 1 p.m. Limestone hosts Anderson University in a non-conference game on Monday at 3 p.m. at Saints Field.
